I am commenting purely to point out that the first and last lines of this piece are genius.
@SterlingCooper05 I live in D.C., lots of friends with kids. You are simply mistaken about the costs of childcare in this region. It's cripplingly high. I know lawyers who stay at home with their kids because day care would more or less eat their whole salary. I have so much sympathy for this woman!
@Reginal T. Squirge The more you talk about this "executive assistant," the more like a jerk you're making yourself sound. You kind of lost me with that in your story, and your attempts to clarify in the comments have made it worst. Best of luck to you.
@tiktaalik Is it possible to be proud of a total stranger? I was so impressed by your post. Sounds like you and your husband haven't had it the easiest with finding jobs, but look at how well you are doing! Also, congrats on the kiddo.
@Never for Money I completely agree. This piece was fine but...I'd rather have had the friend write the story. I also found the "married men" thing weird--as if it's at all remarkable that sex workers sleep with married men.
I'm baffled by the negativity in some of the comments here. He wanted the debt gone. He didn't want to pay any more interest. So he took on a pretty austere lifestyle that few people I know would be able to maintain. I'm impressed.
