On Markets in Everything When There Shouldn't Be Markets in Everything

Just the "moms"? The dads had nothing to do with it, I'm sure. Don't feed the mommy wars.

On Bet You Can Guess What Color Her Skin Is

Wow, thank you for posting that. I read it via Reddit, and it just makes me feel completely hopeless as a non-American woman of color starting work in the United States.

On April is Financial Literacy Month (But Financial Literacy Won't Fix Everything)

@Morbo Why is that absurd?

On Financial Archaeology

My boyfriend kept meticulous accounts of his time in a Russian dorm in St. Petersburg studying for his undergrad degree. Besides a record of every book he ever read, he also has every ruble he spent noted down in a tiny notebook. He was ridiculously frugal in those days, spending the equivalent of $30 each month(!) not including rent and cafeteria food which was paid by his dad. (Thankfully he's loosened up a lot since then). So it's pages and pages of 1 carton eggs, milk, book etc.

On How to Get More Women Applicants (And, Uh, Fewer Men)

This article is really misleading if you click through -- it's not that the gap in job applications was reduced, but the gap in negotiation frequency. That is, when it was explicitly mentioned that wages were negotiable, women were more likely to negotiate while men were less likely to negotiate. It doesn't say anything about the frequency of job applications per se.

On Buy New Food, But Keep the Old (Syke, Don't)

I'm not sure if I'd eat it now (those fruit cups get kinda nasty after a few days) but it was probably fine after a night in your purse. Worst case you'll get a stomach upset, won't kill you.

On Money Spent This Weekend

My spending for the weekend was a grand total of 0 since my parents are visiting for a few weeks from India and insist on paying for everything. It was a good weekend -- we went to the farmer's market on Saturday and bought yummy things to eat, vegetables, herb plants for me to grow and a beautiful bouquet of flowers with peonies. On Sunday my mom and I went to a tango class. I've been taking tango classes for a while and my mom wanted to join in for a class or two. She does salsa regularly so she picked things up really quickly!
