By Worker Parasite on WWYD: Too Many Work Expenses At Once
Ridiculous! I travel a lot for work, though they pay for flights, hotels, and rental cars, so all I have to float are other travel expenses and food, and they take 6-8 weeks to reimburse me. I've gotten to the point that they constantly owe me a few hundred, which sucks, but is nowhere near as bad as this. As others have said, Mike's solution seems like the best possible, but might I add, start looking for a better company to work for? I've had a few jobs that involved travel and every single one of them has offered to advance me money for expenses if needed, without me asking.

I think it boils down to whether "middle class" is a prescriptive or descriptive label. If its prescriptive -- being "middle class" means being able to afford to do X, Y, and Z -- then it's impossibly subjective. But if it simply describes the middle band of income in a place, it's not at all hard to figure out.

Two things: 1) Logan: Well I could afford it when I did it! No, you couldn't. You could pay for it, but you couldn't afford it. There's a huge difference. Basically, you can't afford ANYTHING right now. Sorry. I really really do feel for you but that's something you have to internalize. 2) "It would be good for me to have a place to be everyday at a certain time OR ELSE, but …. I really like not having to be anywhere at a certain time OR ELSE." You can't afford this. And I really mean "afford". -- And I too would love Mike's asparagus lasagna recipe please! In fact, you could make it a fundraiser for Logan: pay $1 and get the recipe. Just make Logan type it up and send all the emails... ?

@Logan Sachon it is but it also ... isn't? I mean, yes, obviously, not every customer a business has is going to be equally profitable. But, you know, if you don't want people ordering a happy hour beer, then don't offer happy hour beers, and if you don't want people nursing drinks at the bar for an hour, set policies that you can only sit there for so long. I can see that sitting at a bar for a long time if you're not ordering more stuff is kind of a dick move if there are other people waiting to sit. But if not, sit there all you want, I say.

the thing about these insane practices is that without realizing it, by participating, you are putting a value judgement on what your time (and sanity) is worth. frankly, i value mine a lot more than a 50% off coupon.

I am so disgusted by the stores opening in the evening on Thanksgiving Day. Retail workers used to be able to count on two days a year that they would never be scheduled: Thanksgiving and Christmas. Just those two. The more we push back the start of Black Friday, the less time they have to travel for their Thanksgiving plans. Not okay. So not okay. When Black Friday started at 5am, you could drive home through the night if needed. What are you supposed to do when the sales start while some people are still eating pie?

In Massachusetts, they can't open on Thanksgiving....so they'll open at midnight. That does not seem better! People are gross.

@polka dots vs stripes You should rent a section of a public park! My cousins chose a Saturday in June and rented out a "recreation venue" - literally, a one room place with a few tables and chairs, and a "porch" with an overhang if the day is nice enough to spend outside - at a public park, and it was perfect! It cost them maybe $300 to have the place for 6 hours. There was a playground right next door for kids, and they had games set up outside too. It was a really fun, happy, casual wedding celebration. Also, you're giving back to your city's Parks and Rec department!

@MilesofMountains Grad school is also the best for shared broke socializing! Since nobody ever had any money there was just a lot of hiking and make-your-own-tacos and drinking Charles Shaw while watching teen soaps. Movies only at the discount theater. Good times. I too am pumped for forced austerity weekend of blizzards, because this week I bought a plane ticket to San Fran for my birthday weekend ($320 cross-country!) and a bridesmaid dress ($170 + $20 shipping). So many dollars, flying by.
