On So Cool to Live in a Post-Race World
Flyover Feminism has a great series on now about names and how they've affected the various submitters' lives. This one by Trudy Hamilton is so very good, and the inverse of the situation Logan describes above. Also, I hope nobody here is suggesting that they discriminate based on name, because that would be uncool. I may be interpreting it wrong but some of the comments here are getting me a little squicky.

On Friday Estimate
Bike shopping! I hope I don't find anything, but if I do, budget is $500. I know, it's the worst time to look, but I figure they gotta get rid of old stock eventually...

On WWYD: A Job After Graduation
I took a job on campus after graduating with my BA in Arts...washing dishes at the main food hall. It was a part-time union job, with a good wage and decent coworkers, but having to scrape uneaten food from first years' and smug engineering students' plates...I just couldn't take it. I wasn't Mike Dang enough for that job. (Instead I worked catering, which was more stressful but had more independence and less interaction with students.)

On SPENT
Also, outside of major centres, you can't get a job without "reliable transportation" and businesses don't consider the bus reliable transportation, at least not in Midwestern Canada. I know. This game made me so ragey, but on the other hand it reminded me to donate to local orgs, so there's that.

On "Could You Spare $5?"
@Bill Schoonmaker@twitter You know, if someone handed me a sandwich I'd toss it on the ground too. This whole thing about how beggars should be grateful to get anything is harmful.

On The Business of Streaming Music
Another thing: I want to listen to music again and again, hopefully for a long period of time (decades in some cases). I usually only watch a movie/TV show once or twice, with the exception of Arrested Development, and I prefer not to have a whack of indifferent DVDs cluttering up my bookcases.

On Our Couches, Ourselves
A couch is the second investment thing you should get after buying a new mattress once you have a decent job. Unless you are of that inscrutable class of people who don't use couches. Or you have a bachelor apartment, in which case a table and chairs is #2.
