On Okay Fine You Can Pee At Work But We're Not Paying For It

@elginkevin This is what really gets me about much of the debate about mandating things like paid sick leave and health insurance especially wrt Obamacare. It's like these bosses totally forget that they are but one part of a national economy. Guess what happens when, say, you let children stay on their parent's health insurance til 26? They have more money TO BUY STUFF (like, oh, i donno, pizza? Papa John's, I'm looking at you). Guess what happens when employees don't have to worry about getting sick? They stay put longer, reducing turnover and costing the company less in the long run. Guess what happens when women have babies? They buy stuff for their NEW LITTLE HUMAN BEING.

On Should Your Wedding Gift Cover Your Meal?

Some of these are good ideas, but it's my experience that with photographers you get what you pay for. Instagram is nice (and cheap!), but there's no guarantee you'll get what you want, that the photos will be flattering, that they won't devolve into drunken party photos...which is fine, if you're willing to take that risk! Hiring a good photographer was the best (and most!) money I spent on my wedding (the total cost of which came nowhere near $20k.) But yes, you absolutely never ever really should not expect to make money back on your wedding. You throw the party, you pay for it. Do not expect your guests (who, presumably, all come from different financial backgrounds...) to pay you for the price of their meal. Come on.

On What'd You Spend On Your Bed? Like $200? Does That Sound Right?

@ultimaterollo I just dealt with bed bugs (am still dealing with them, but at least they are dead now...) They do truly suck in more ways than I am able to express. I hate them with the fire of a thousand dryer cycles.

On Rich Man Lives Minimal Life (But Still Rich)

The point about not having enough money to live minimally is SO TRUE. There's a huge, huge difference between living minimally because you literally have zero dollars to spend on stuff (and therefore you make do with what you have...including quirky appliances, old shoes, jerry-rigged shoe shelf...) and having all the money you need to customize your living space so that it's minimal and efficient and high-quality. Relatedly, I just read this post "...there are [people] who could totally afford $90 yoga pants, but who are so secure in the knowledge that they could do so that $90 leggings don't feel special. If you don't have the concept of needing to save up for anything, you can afford, as it were, to be less materialistic. Status items lose their appeal if you already have whichever status. Result: they're associated with strivers. It's a form of status to have whichever handbag, but a still-greater form to not get one."

On Bitcoins and Gold Coins: 'They're All Just Digital Score Sheets'

Wow, I'm honestly surprised that the Guardian didn't report on this more critically. "The world's best performing currency"?!? Come on. Mining one bitcoin takes actual money (dollars!) and energy (SO MUCH energy, seriously, so much energy.) The more people that mine, the harder it is to produce a bitcoin; the harder it is to mine and produce, the more power it uses; the more power it uses, the more expensive (in actual dollars) your energy bill (Note that Youtube dude's $700/month energy bill). It is basically impossible to mine bitcoins now without purchasing a custom-built machine equipped with exotic processors. Buying a pizza with bitcoin takes like two hours. Every verification done on a bitcoin transaction charges a transaction fee. Tl;dr: there is zero chance of this posing a threat to the euro.

On Open Thread

@terrific You CAN export your statements from your bank and then import them into YNAB. It's not as automated as Mint, but it's one way to do it. However, I find that having to enter it manually makes me much more attentive to my moneys. I love love love YNAB.

On A Conversation About Power, Sex, and Money

@stuffisthings Congrats! Yay marriage! After reading this yesterday we set up a joint account with basically this same plan in mind and kind of as a first step to joining everything down the road. (We, too, stereotypes when it comes to the video game vs. groceries decisions.)
