On Bed Bug Season, Hurrayyyy
Ok, a couple things to note. The steam cleaner is basically useless unless maybe you want to use it on clothes? It will not work on mattresses or upholstered items because the bugs just burrow down where the steam can't touch them. Second, you don't need to, and in fact shouldn't, get rid of your mattress or other belongings, all that does is spread the infestation around to other people. The heat treatment is great, and that's definitely the route I'd go in a single family home, but I'm not sure it would be effective in the long term in an apartment. As with any other treatment the bugs just migrate to other apartments and then come back when your apartment is a safe environment for them again. Treating the whole building is really the best/only way to go.

@cherrispryte what you are saying is totally true, I think what I was trying to say, though didn't do a good job of, is basically what mishaps said below: find experiences that fulfill you without costing $$ and don't let what you can't have bring you down. For me it's easy to recreate the salad and book thing because I have a well stocked fridge and a little back yard to sit in. Not everyone has these things! It's always been pretty easy for me to enjoy free experiences like hanging out at the park or at home with friends so sometimes I just get frustrated reading these posts because I feel like it should be easy for Logan/anybody too. But it's not easy! Ultimately I guess I would say that for most people it's not ever going to be financially sustainable to go out to a restaurant and have dinner and a couple drinks multiple nights of the week and so we all have to find ways to make ourselves happy without that, and maybe a cone is Logan's best solution for that, and that's fine!

I don't know if comments like mine are just completely beating a dead horse but that salad you describe would be incredibly easy and quick to make at home. You could eat it with your book on your fire escape, roof, or front stoop, or in the park. And for the price of one of those beers at a restaurant you're well on your way to a six pack. I guess my point is I think you can fulfill a lot of your impulses in ways that will still bring you pleasure, but in an affordable way.

Ha! I found this book irritating enough that I didn't bother to finish it. I felt like she glossed over a lot of tough issues (like her drug addiction?!) and I was irked by her general attitude towards things. I was surprised to find myself lumping it in with this cultural thing I feel is going on now where people are like "oh my life is a mess and I don't care who I hurt because I'm a mess so I can't help it." Like the whole first part of the book where her pack is insanely heavy I was almost screaming "just take some stuff out!" However, I guess I wasn't all that irritated by her attitude towards money.

I'm guessing if I didn't want to buy a pie crust I could use the same recipe I use for chocolate cheesecake crust - mash up chocolate wafer cookies (or chocolate teddy grahams!) and mix with melted butter.

Also! When I am low on funds and go out anyway I often just spend the evening with a nagging little voice in the back of my head that says "you shouldn't be spending this money." In those instances I definitely would have more fun staying home with my DVRed episodes of Real Housewives.

Just wondering how many people have actually met benefactors and CTOs in bars? I guess I am old (I'm coming up on 29) but I just got to a certain point where I realized I'm only interested in talking to my friends so there's not much point in going to bars when we can have cheaper drinks and snacks in the comfort of home. I still love bars and enjoy going out from time to time but I mainly only go to happy hour with coworkers now and infrequent special occasions in the nighttime hours with friends (on one of these recently I nursed a seltzer water all night because I didn't feel like spending cash and had to drive home - I still had a lot of fun). In my younger days, when I lived in NYC, a friend and I would fill water bottles with white wine and wander around the city talking and drinking. Much more fun than sitting in a bar, especially on a beautiful warm evening.
