On I Almost Joined the Reserves for the Money, But That Wasn't Enough

This will sound ridiculous, but I had a favorite Disney video as a very young child. It was called An Officer and a Duck. My dad taped it off TV. It was basically comprised of a bunch of World War II era Donald Duck cartoons which in retrospect I realize were total propaganda pieces. In the beginning, Donald goes to the recruiting office and goes through pretty much the same steps you described: awkward exam in one room on to awkward exam in another and so on, until he gets sworn in immediately after. I had no idea it actually worked that way!

On Places I've Lived: Ireland, My Grandmother's, and A Place to Plant Roots

@nap city I'm having so much fun saying this with a French accent.

On Get Naked While the Getting's Good (And Free)

@hellonheels There are always bad weather nudists out there. I guess the joy of exposing yourself outweighs comfort? I foolishly left the house today with my umbrella but only a light sweater rather than a coat and I'm already regretting it.

On How I Negotiated My Rent in San Francisco

This is inspiring. I live in Noe Valley in a 2-bedroom with a friend. We've been there a little over three years and are planning to move out and go our separate ways in early 2013. Even though this apartment has served me well, I'm really excited to move. But the rents in SF right now are INSANE. Another unit in our building is open right now and it's going for $800 more than our original rent. I would really love to get my own place but I'll probably need to find another more affordable house share situation (I work for a non-profit which means I'm not raking in the big bucks). Maybe I can charm some friendly landlord into slightly cheaper rent for a little studio somewhere like this piece's author did? I'm more than willing to dispose of any stray coupon books!

On Clever and Free Costume Ideas (Give Them to Me)

Take a cheap slip and write stuff like "unconscious mind," "neuroses," "Vienna," and "penis envy" on it: Freudian slip.

On My New Career Plan: Reality Show Contestant

@cliuless I used to have a pipe dream that my friends and I would apply for The Real World so strategically (by interviewing ever so dramatically and carving out pre-conflicts with each other), that we would all get cast. Then once the cameras start rolling, we'd be nice, read quietly, and play Yahtzee for a few months. In your face, MTV!

On We Are All On a Journey, Man (But Not The Same Journey)

I just have to say that I immediately recognized the image from this piece from the finale of Freaks and Geeks. Such a fantastic show! And this was yet another great Billfold pieces. I love the Monday and Friday check-ins the most.

On Yes, Going to Clubs in Vegas is Expensive

I think I could enjoy Vegas if I had a ton of $ to drop on shows and fine dining but a big no thank you, sir, to all the hot, crowded, overpriced clubs. Also, casinos creep me out so hard.
