On The Collapse of a Marriage

Hmm. So they had a lot of money that he earned, and she'd quit working to be lady of the house, and when it was time to split up she felt that she ought to remain a rich person, and he did every nasty trick in the book to keep the money away from her. Both of them abetted by lawyers who made more dough the longer they fought. I am slightly more sympathetic to her. But they both sound awful, and their kids are doomed.

On Earning a Living as a Cannabis Baker

You know the new This American Life, about coincidences? Last thing before I left the office yesterday I googled "pot butter" because my mother is starting chemo and asked me for brownies from the Alice B. Toklas cookbook.

On I Give Strangers Rides, They Give Me Money

Airbnb of the road. Are there numbers for how much untaxed income in CA and SF County this adds up to?

On Logan Saw a Dude Steal Some Coffee And Said Nothing And Mike Is Like, That's Wrong

What if you walked out and the guy was there, and he thanks you for not telling on him? And then he hands you half the coffee? Do you drink it? Keep it and not drink it? Put it in the poor box? What if the next day he's there, and he tells you, "Spill your purse while I use the diversion to walk out with this stainless travel mug"?

On Fired Waitress Speaks Out

This guy got the 18% tip added to his bill, presumably because it was a big table, and crossed it out, and stiffed her entirely? Tip was $0? An image of his (or her, I guess) receipt went out on the net but not with any way to identify him, and it worth going back to complain? Worth someone's livelihood? Applebee's, man. It's legal to fire the employee (next wait person stiffed with a mean message, I guess should post a facsimile of the document). But god Applebee's, you suck donkey. Seriously. You are almost as awful as the customer you pander to. Wait, it was a pastor? Jeez.

On Rental Payment History

@jfruh That's what I was thinking. Giving you the option to pay a month's rent not to have to find a canceled check from two years ago. I wasn't all that happy when my bank let me know they were "saving me the trouble of storing checks" by stopping sending them to me and letting me pay them if I needed one from father back than they keep them online.

On To Get a Flu Shot or Not (Some Reasons)

I have heard some really amazingly dumb rationales for refusing to get a flu shot. Or even take a flu shot, from a person standing there ready to administer it, no charge, no waiting. It is my secret belief that they are afraid of needles.

On My Year in Money: It's Okay to Get a Housecleaner and Buy Cheese

I have zero guilt over my housecleaner, and if I told her it would make me feel virtuous to fire her, clean my own toilet, and spend her income on some other luxury like pedicures or hardcover books, I don't think she would appreciate the gesture. For extra credit, do your payroll taxes, so that they get their social security, and the US gets their income tax.
