On Bet You Can Guess What Color Her Skin Is

This is so anger inducing! Also, about the tag...maybe another tag for stories like this? Because I don't think this is really about class. She and hubs are the same 'class' as everyone at the party. Maybe 'Our Colorblind Society.'

On When to Leave an Internship

"This was an internship that showed me what it means to be taken advantage of as an intern." --> Every internship that is unpaid is taking advantage of you. Labor should be paid for. Simple fact. "opportunities have a way of turning up for talented, hard working individuals." --> Opportunities have a way of turning up for people who HUSTLE themselves and their work and make the people around them feel good. Hard work alone does not the paid job make. This is something it took me a long time to learn. I coulnd't just do the job well. I had to do the job well, and follow up after my internship, ever so politely, and check in, and smooze, and charm, and remind them I existed, and email people I met once at a party who happened to say they could help and ASK THEM TO HELP. Real talk. Signed - two unpaid internships in my competitive field that directly led to my paid regular job in my field. The system is messed up. Companies and organizations can afford minimum wage. Also, read Ross Perlin's excellent book on this subject, everyone.

On Betting on Love, Leveling Up and Leaving Atlanta (Part VI)

@highjump Grandma (me) agrees. I think you need to PICK ONE and focus the energies on it. Like, the abroad one! YOLO, dudes. But yeah May is not afar away at all and trying to pursue 3 things at once might be a challenge. I get not wanting to put all eggs in one basket but you can still send out a few stateside resumes while getting Latin America sorted. But yeah go! Also-- um, the bioline. Look, I know what makes Billfold awesome is not judgeying other people's spending--and but why why charge it on the card? That's your ticket to Argentina/Colombia/Venezuela right there ...I want you to live your dream and you guys ARE working super hard for it, charging a couple thouso to Uncle Visa is maybe not the best thing right now? Sorry I just don't think you would've put it in your bioline if you didn't want us to weigh in a bit.

On Bad Things Are Happening to People Who Aren't Us, So Why Are We So Distracted

"It feels kind of … I don’t know, disingenuous to know that and see that and not do anything, and then now be like, THIS HURRICANE HAPPENED I MUST HELP. " Wow. I'm sorry, but no one is parsing your motivation but you. I really admire my friends who regularly volunteer. I don't. Because there's other things I'd rather do with my time. That doesn't make me super proud of myself, and maybe it'll change. But I admit it, you know? Related: I work in an industry built to help others. My motivations for that are complicated, and only part of it is helping people.

On Friday Estimate

I'm buying a snazzy handbag that I've had my eye on for over a year - $120. I'm going to a party tonight but its fancy and catered so I'm just bringing my hot self. Getting myself there means a taxi ride - about $15. I'll probably sleep at a friends' and we'll go to brunch - $20. I'll also probably hit the grocery store that's another $35, tops. So total for the weekend = $180, skewed by my big purchase.

On One Way to Apply for a Job

But item 1 is really important and how jobs are actually found? The successful people don't need to be your FRIENDS but the closer they get to being your friends the more useful it is for you.

On Weddings Are Super Expensive to Attend, It Turns Out

I declined being a BM for one of my closest friends because I couldn't pay the cost out of pocket. Happy with my decision, and she has been great about it. Other friends have been judgier (ie "I will go to your wedding no matter what, bc you are my best friend.") Bank account does not understand bestieness.
