@Halifax Machine Omg I would love a post about entry-level art buying! I want to graduate past buying letterpress prints and into like sub $300 art and maybe in the next year or two a $1000 piece? Paintings specifically. Anyone got advice?

@AitchBee Yes! The author kind of does this too but given all the emphasis on travel on The Awl network, especially The Hairpin, I enjoy this counter balance. No only does the author not travel she saves money to buy objects with no practical purpose! Because art is rad and wanting to own art rather than fly to Paris is a super-valid life choice!

@jillcool Neighbors! Yes the technology involved in farming is expensive and amazing. My uncle who is still farming has the equivalent of 2 PhDs (He used to raise hog as well as crop so two disciplines if you will) from the UofM extension school to keep up with everything. It is the most important kind of science.

@jillcool Well the hashtag indicates a wide use of planting, maybe it is regional? FWIW, I'm from MN, we used 'planting' for corn and soy. And vegetables come to think of it. Where are you from?

@stuffisthings It is actually easier than you think, but usually provided by carriers you've never heard of that have a regional near-monopoly. The open space and relative lack of users makes it a little easier than DC. Farming is big business even though it is not dense.

I'm in the process of saving a For Serious Emergencies Only (not for plane ticket sale "emergencies") fund and I think I need to keep in it a totally separate bank. But I've only ever had one savings account and one checking account. Share your wisdom please!

On How Much Do You Spend on Groceries Every Week?
@stuffisthings I don't want to pull up that particular category but I am SURE it is at least that much. I also "hide" my bar transactions by putting them in restaurants because if I had chips and salsa it totally counts as dinner and not just a bunch of margaritas, right?
