Mac- I totally agree about the temp agency's. I've known a lot of people who don't seem to mind them, but, I had exactly same reaction as you did. The whole atmosphere and people working at the temp agency made my skin crawl. The epitome of being valued for your submission and obedience. And they do totally exploit workers. I worked briefly for a well known "vine ripened" tomato greenhouse that ships there tomatoes all over New England. It was not a bad job and for the most part employees were treated well, except there were some employees that had been hired thru a temp agency. Those employees got totally ripped off by the temp agency. Any bonus pay we received for efficiency and exceeding deadlines etc. the temp company pocketed. Also, while the rest of us were paid $10 + per hour, the temp employees received minimum wage. They also could be fired or laid off at will because they weren't technically employed by the tomato company, they were employed by the temp agency. Many of them were opting to put up with it for a full year until the temp contract ran out, at which time, the Tomato company could hire them on directly. What was also sad, of note, the majority of the temp workers were minorities or immigrants, they found it hard to get direct hire jobs so settled for temp jobs as the way to get a foot in the door with a company. I will also say, they were incredibly hard working despite getting less pay and perks than the direct hire employees.
