@urwelt Yeah. There were a few times during the trip when my general desire to not cause a scene was in direct conflict with my "OMGWTF?" reaction. I settled for taking photos and then mocking them on the Internet - that'll teach them!
@jfruh Yes! The makeup on the nun mannequins killed me.
@sheistolerable Ha, I know, I was appalled at myself, too. But during that heat wave I figured flavorless fridge tomatoes were marginally better than quickly-rotted counter tomatoes.
@acorn575 Gelato! I think you have just decided my next big vacation.
@garysixpack @angry little raincloud The Lufthansa terminal sounds nuts! I was admittedly a little spoiled going into this by my previous experiences with Asian (economy class!) airport lounges: http://thebillfold.com/2012/11/how-to-spend-two-weeks-and-1400-in-thailand/
@orejitasmiamor That's interesting! I'd run into it informally before (and agreed, usually don't mind), but this was the first time I'd seen such an official demarcation. Kind of nice and upfront, though!
@cobalt I looked into that budget route to Koh Samui, and yeah, it was totally worth the splurge. (Especially since we were coming from Chiang Mai, it would have taken about two whole days to get there through cheaper means.) Do you use your kitty system even if you're traveling with just one other person? I see it making sense for larger groups, but it sounds like it requires a bit more upfront organization than I usually have!
@thenotestaken Your trip sounds fantastic! There was a part of me that really regretted not trying the buses or the overnight train. It came down more to time than comfort (though admittedly I'm not complaining about the comfort).
