On I Need to Do Everything in My Power Not to Be Poor
@Benny Profane Right?! She makes it sound like she goes to happy hour all the time but I bet really she hardly ever goes and seriously? "Happy" is probably not even a thing in her vocabulary except when she's sobbing in her sliding scale therapist's office asking why she can never, ever ever have it. Or maybe your worldview could use some expansion?

On Sipping on Water and Juice
I tend to tip similarly whether I'm drinking soda water, juice or beer - usually $1/drink. When its like a $12 marg or other mixed drink requiring more time and effort, more tip makes sense. Same in coffee shops. I tend to consider time, effort, and busy-ness of establishment in my tipping and space occupancy.

On Crushing Debt Drove Me to Kosovo — And Then to Iraq
@Miss Havisham@twitter Actually, taking a regular, average US salary does not sound like war profiteering to me at all. Last month I was visiting with friends and asked how one of their younger brothers was doing, as last time I saw him he bailed on a weekend trip last minute because he was out partying too hard for multiple preceding nights - leaving us to still account for his share of the housing rental. Turns out right now he's in Iraq as well, doing some 'security infrastructure' work. For emming-effing $485k a year. Half a million. HALF A MILLION. And his political stance sure isn't nearly as compassionate or wanderlusty as this author.

On Sir, You Cannot Sit Next to These Children
@cherrispryte I'm about to move so I've been looking at a variety of crime stats in different neighborhoods (which I'm not even sure if I recommend because then you just want to live in a hole under a rock...with security guards) and I will say that it was less than 1 per 100. Yeah, please refer to your exchange with melis above for the root of all this BS.

On Let's Discuss the Merits of Anthropologie (The Clothing Store, Not the Discipline)
@cuminafterall Last winter I decided I just HAD to have a pair of bright colored skinny cords (thanks to Friday Bargain Bin of course) and so I headed to the mall, where the J Crew ones from FBB were not in-store so I headed to Anthro. Found a pair I loved until I turned around the price tag: $189 or thereabouts. I was just about to say fuck it and leave the mall but I stopped into Free People (same company as Anthro) and found basically identical cords for $68.

On Let's Discuss the Merits of Anthropologie (The Clothing Store, Not the Discipline)
@cherrispryte Yes, yes! It's hard to be a conscious consumer, but if I don't care to eat at Chik fil a anymore because of the factory farmed meat and their horrid marriage BS going on right now, how can I then spend money at any of this company's stores?! I mean, their product is actually pretty comparable to factory farmed meat, no? And also regarding cultural appropriation, my background is in art and I keep up with several design blogs and other publications, and it's been widely reported that Anthro has no problem buying beautifully hand made objects on etsy and then having facsimiles mass manufactured to sell in their stores.

On The Best Snacks (In Mostly Ascending Order)
Has anyone had Popcorn, Indiana brand white cheddar popcorn? They only have it in the extra large bags at the Walgreens by my office. I can only buy it every once in a long while because I eat it until I'm sick...and then eat more.

On The Best Snacks (In Mostly Ascending Order)
@Megano! Boulder chip company makes a balsamic and rosemary chip that I am only allowed to buy if I'm on my way to a party and I put the bag all the way in the back of the car so I can't possibly get to it while driving.

On Chatting About Babies, and How One Couple is Planning for a New Arrival
As far as the scheduling thing goes, my close friends who've had kids have all used an online calendar service to set up visits and meal deliveries. One of the best pieces of advice, I thought, was to have food delivered only 3x per week, otherwise it builds up because you can't eat it all and then there is rotting food to clean up. The meal deliveries are also nice because it's a built in visit schedule too... Congratulations!!

On My Sick Secret: Elderberries
From what I understand, elderberry is best for cough and sore throat, but it is also one of those super intense berries with lots of antioxidants so it should be good for you in general. I take this Herbal Resistance Liquid which not only has such an awesome name, it works great too! I like the alcohol free kind (less harsh tasting) and I put a dropperful or two in a half inch of water. Be well everyone! bah. i seem to have lost my linking powers... http://www.sourcenaturals.com/products/GP1347/
