On How to Stop Going into Credit Card Debt for the Sake of "Points"

@seaermine Me too! I use Mint religiously and am constantly looking at the charts to see how my current spending compares to last month's, etc. I self-correct as needed throughout the month. But I don't manually add in what I spend cash on; that sounds like a pain in the ass. Any cash I have gets spend more quickly and on unnecessary things because it's not being tracked and therefore I can't easily hold myself accountable for it. I use cards for everything, even $2 fast food purchases.

On What Percentage of Your Pay Do You Spend on Rent?

My husband and I spend 17% of our take-home pay on rent. Pre-marriage, when we were living together but didn't have joint finances, I spent 25% on rent. Before that, when I lived alone I spent 40% on rent.

On I Could Have Been a Great Opera Singer, If I Were Rich

Naive question here: So if you're not working a day job and you can't be a "real" opera singer yet, what do you do all day?

On Should Your Wedding Gift Cover Your Meal?

@katerrific I know! There are so many beliefs I feel that about (big and small), but man, there are a lot of misguided wedding-related beliefs out there. For bride/groom, guests, parents, everybody. This is one of the worst, but fortunately I don't know too many people who think they need to follow it (or expect others too).

On Monday Check-In

I ate out every meal except Sunday dinner, met a friend for drinks, got my dog groomed, and bought groceries. That came out to $220 (estimated $250). I did not buy a house.

On Friday Estimate

@TheclaAndTheSeals That would be a great Monday check-in. Everybody going, "I planned to spend $40 but I actually spent $50 but it's ok because XYZ," and my saying, "I planned to spend $250 but I actually spent $250,000..."

On Friday Estimate

My plans for the weekend are (a) unusually social and (b) filled with errands to catch up on, so I'll estimate $250. I'm also house hunting so who knows, maybe I'll buy a house and then my estimate will be completely blown.

On And I'm Proud to Be an American, Where I Can Do 1 Thing

I called the vet for a refill for my dog's heartworm meds. He usually takes it on the 15th, but I forgot for a WEEK and then realized I was out, and then I kept forgetting to call the vet. So I feel pretty terrible about that. But it's done.
