@sxh Too bad you're wrong. A bolt is anything that blocks the rear of the chamber, and thus is required on pretty much any firearm. Bolt actions describe a system where you manually manipulate the bolt to chamber a new round, but are not the only systems that use bolts.
She's shooting a Ruger 10/22 (as mentioned in the story), which is a semi-auto rifle, but still has a bolt (http://www.ruger.com/products/_manuals/1022.pdf).
Finally, there are plenty of bolt-action firearms that do feature magazines, such as Lee-Enfields.
