I remember this from college! I never did it because I was actually in school and so had student loans (a more subtle, lifelong drain) but most of my friends were repeat donors. My understanding (totally anecdotal) was that a small proportion of the plasma was used for life-saving medical procedures, mainly for burn victims, and the majority was for plastic surgery. So I guess it could be seen as the rich literally draining the blood of the poor? Can't wait until organ sales are fully liberalized under the Romney-Ryan administration!
