On Monday Check-In: Check Fights

I am home in Nova Scotia for Canadian Thanksgiving! It has been great. Every time I go home I go crazy shopping at this amazing used clothing shop (yes, it has its own New Yorker article) where clothing runs from $1.25-$5.50. I tend to buy a lot but I have an interesting wardrobe and though I might buy $60 worth of clothes in a weekend, that's a full suitcase of stuff to bring back to Montreal. SO: Friday: $40 - trip up to Frenchy's in Truro (highlights include two really interesting dresses, a skirt/ blazer set that is very Jackie O and a suede coat with a great cut) $20 - went on a date that kind of sucked, tried to pay for my own drinks but was rebuffed - cabbed it home. Saturday - $7 on a hungover breakfast $40 on a fruit tray and veggie tray and pita to bring to a close friend's engagement party. Sunday - $35 Trip down to the beautiful Annapolis Valley to have Thanksgiving dinner with the grandparents - made my mom stop at three Frenchy's on the way (highlights: amazing Agent 99-style dress, 2 pairs of shoes, sexy velvet evening dress). Total: $142. Not terrible! Will be going home with a full suitcase. Though it's a long weekend and I predict I'll spend $30-40 today to get that friend a small engagement gift and we'll probably go for coffee.

On Monday Check-In

I think I estimated like $80 on the low end, and almost $200 on the high end because I was thinking of going shopping and had a bunch of social events. LUCKILY, I woke up on Saturday with a cold that kept me under the covers for most of the weekend so apart from a few trips to the local cafe, I spent nothing. Estimated:$80 Actual: $18 on hot chocolates to share with the roomie and coffees at my fave cafe. I have literally never spent this little money. BUT I'm going home for thanksgiving weekend and it's a friend's engagement party, plus I need a haircut, PLUS I still need to get groceries so it will all even out I'm sure by the end of the week. Still, good feeling... apart from the lingering sick feelings.

On Friday Estimate

Ok, real estimate time: Tonight: coffee with a friend, maybe a karma hot yoga session and a nice night in - $20 Tomorrow: All-day law school event with free pizza and beer after. 2 parties to go to, so probably $30 in alcohol and $15 for supper? Sunday: Hopefully will be cheap-ish - $20 for either groceries or brunch and a cafe visit to do some work? Conservative Estimate: $85 Realistically... may get called to go to karaoke, may go on shopping spree because when i'm stressed about school i shop... hmm. $140.

On Do All The Things You've Been Putting Off (Syke Just Do 1 Thing)

I did my one thing today, and it was to renew my expired (by 4 months) health card. I scanned in my form and *emailed* it to my provincial health service and BINGO health care coverage extended for a year. Big relief!

On Monday Check-In: Breaking Bread

Aw frig, I don't even want to check my Friday predictions because I know it was under $100, and I spent SO MUCH MORE than that. Friday: Really cheap. A friend had people over but I knew I'd go out the next night so I bought a bottle of mineral water for like $2.50 and shared it with a friend. Saturday: Got groceries and ingredients to make a dish to bring to the potluck for $37. Stopped for beer ($7). Then we all went to an EPIC Rich Aucoin pop montreal show - which was the best night I've had in recent memory (ticket $15). Afterward we were all drenched in sweat and not ready to go home so we stopped at a bar for one last pint ($7). Sunday: OUCH. Brunch as planned ($18). Then broke down and went shopping for some much needed black dress pants (Gap, $70) and a cardigan ($25). Then really went overboard and instead of buying sweat pants at Walmart or Zellers I went to lulu and dropped $90 on a pair. Provided the shape lasts though I think they'll be good - need them to chuck on over my shorts to walk home after a workout. Total damage: $266.50 Seriously I need to make a budget :(

On Friday Estimate

My weekend estimate is about $30 for groceries, and a night out on Saturday to a pop montreal show. Going to a potluck beforehand, bringing wine/ beer... it will probably be an expensive evening? Weekend estimate: $90

On Monday Check-In: Weekend Restraint

What a weekend! I was at the family cottage, miiiiiles and miles from civilization, so spending was low, but still, not nothing. Friday: $36.50 for two books at my local independent bookstore. Book-buying is never a waste of money. They also gave me two advanced reader's copies (shhh!) really I got 4 books for that. $3 on a double americano at my favourite cafe Saturday: $0 - groceries were paid for by dad & spent all day on the beach. Sunday: $0 for another beach day, including an ice cream on the drive home that dad also bought (love you, thanks). Total: $39.50. WOO!!!! Cheapest weekend ever! Unfortunately I've got a good $300 of friend-wedding-related expenses coming up in the next 2 weeks, so I'm still pretty screwed.

On Monday Check-In: Let's Talk About Heirloom Tomatoes

Those tomato sandwiches look glorious. Friday: $13.50 to rent three movies, because Canadian netflix sucks Saturday: $113 on a pair of leather boat shoes - up till now I've had no regular shoes for a while! $3.75 on strawberries and a peach, walking home from the gym. $10 on three iced-coffees (treating a couple pals) $22 on hummus & cheese and pita, because apparently I can't bring myself to cook anything ever this summer, choosing instead to subsist on pita & fruit & yogurt & chocolate Sunday: $2 on two montreal "everything" bagels $25 on cheese, hummus, strawberries, peaches, trail mix, chocolate $30 at the pharmacy on face wash and moisturizer (why does my skin hate me?) $15 on beer and nachos to console a friend going through a rough time WHILE watching the 100m dash. Damage: $234.25 but not including the shoes, which I don't because they were bought with birthday money (mike dang you're right, truly the best gift is cash), $121.25 which is about what I was hoping.

On Monday Check-In: My Spending Rises

Friday: Planned on a night in with wine ($13) and the roommate, then got invited out unexpectedly so spent another $30 at the bar. Saturday: Went to brunch with the roomie ($15), then picked up some items for a picnic ($25 for pineapple, cheese, grapes, dates, and some beer) and we headed to Shakespeare in the Park (we each donated $10). Another $6 for beer to go to a friend's party after. Sunday: Woke up laaaaaaate! Signed up at my local library having just moved this month (FREE), took out 6 books, went to a cafe to read for a few hours ($3.50), then came back home and got groceries ($35 for a several days worth) and made a delicious salad with kale, goat cheese, cranberries, balsamic reduction and sauteed portobello mushrooms). Then went for a midnight run after snacking on too many dates. This is the first weekend out of 5 that I haven't had moving or guest- related expenses. How'd I do? Total: $137.50 - could be better, but not shockingly bad.
