On A Cool Savings Plan I've Discovered Is Lactose Intolerance (I Want to Die)
I thought I was lactose intolerant for the longest two years of my life (also self diagnosed) but it turns out I'm not - I have celiac instead! Yay. Apparently it's often misdiagnosed as lactose intolerance, since the damage does interfere with lactose digestion. So, the good news: all cheese, all the time. The bad news: no bread (and eleventy-billion other random things.) For you, I reeeeally hope it's just the lactose. And eat the fro-yo!

I really think that the "American Dream" of homeownership is simply becoming irrelevant for a large segment of society. When my grandparents bought their house, they did it believing they would be there for the rest of their lives. Although they moved away some 30 years later, it was because my grandfather had "retired" from GE and was asked to volunteer full time at Mystic Seaport. The house they moved to there was in fact the one they stayed in until they passed (30 years later.) That's two houses, over approximately 60 years. Now, however, I see friends and coworkers who are horribly underemployed (or simply unhappy with the increasingly awful, racist culture our politicians are whipping up), but who can't leave the area, because they too are underwater on their homes. The days of being able to get a job and, barring extraordinary circumstances, knowing that that job is yours until the day they give you your gold watch, are gone. I personally can't even imagine tying myself down with a house, knowing how unrealistic it is that I'll both find a job that pays a living wage, and be able to keep it. I'm more than happy to give a rent check to a landlord who will be responsible for repairs and upkeep, and the ability to pick up and go if I need to.

On Cheap Eats: Cumin Black Bean Salad
This is similar to SW veggie bake: 20 oz of frozen corn, 1 can golden hominey, 1 can diced tomatoes, 1 can black beans, 1 can diced green chiles and black pepper. Drain everything but the tomatoes (and rinse off the black beans). Mix it all up, dump it in a casserole dish and bake it, covered at 350 for 25 minutes. Take the cover off, sprinkle it with cheddar, and bake for another 10. Yum!

@sox Oh, I was just diagnosed with celiac on Monday, and I'm still reeling. It's so expensive!! And I love to bake; it's so soothing, but $8 for a 1 lb bag of rice flour?!?! I just can't afford that. So, um, which pancake mix do you use for you gf friends?

On On Easter Egg Hunts and Allowances
As evidenced by my avatar over there <---, I love Easter, so I still hide eggs for my 15 year old to find. Real, dyed ones, which can be dicey in the desert, so I generally wait until it's about time for her to get up, hide them quickly, and then make her run out and find them right away. She's terrible at it, too. She was absolutely convinced for more years than I ever expected that the Easter Bunny (aka, Bun-Bun) lived in the irrigation drain under Grandma's front walk, and wigged out when they had some landscaping done, and the walk was temporarily torn up.
