On Labor Labor Labor

@WayDownSouth he acknowledges his bias from the beginning. He is also much more interesting that union organizers, because he is familiar with the rise of a new labor movement that is not necessarily interested in collective bargaining; rather, in making a fair situation for many workers.

On How Much Do You Spend on Groceries Every Week?

@Dancercise this is my question. and also why I turned to oatmeal (initially) (now I like it). I spend about 70-80 per week, including beer, toiletries and cleaning supplies. and really bougie cheese. In a big shopping trip to one store, or several stores in a go, I'll spend less, but invariably will need to buy some apples, or eggs, mid-week. And those come from the closer, more expensive stores.

On India's Elite/"Middle Class"

so much proof that class and money are not always the same thing. and that being rich can be uncomfortable. but as a person who is not rich, I do not have a thing against rich people. I recognize my own bougie ways - cheese, beer, chocolate, coffee, all must be a certain brand or kind in order for me to be happy. I have a thing against people who are not self-aware, or aware of the global context, and who make their money from certain mining companies and then donate it to my university and various hospitals in my city to assuage their guilt. oh wait. that means I hate one specific person. At the same time, I have a thing against people who are stingy (with time, money - and which I find generally works inversely to income. I guard against this myself).

On I Made $570K Last Year, But I Don't Feel Rich (In Fact, I Feel Worried)

@loren smith hey loren - why are you saving? if you want to study, and financially can, do it! if you want to use it to retire, do it! but, seems like you and your husband are a bit more logical about cash money and other money than this dude.

On Friday Estimate

My goal is to get my spending out of control. Today was "austerity day" and I still ended up going out for tea. oops. If I'm going to go into personal austerity mode due to uncertain employment future, I need to crack down. So. Today: 2.75$ for tea. tomorrow: book club. might bring something cooked to share (I bought groceries yesterday, so I could legitimately do this). sunday: buy transit tokens. guesstimate of a bajillion dollars because the price keeps going up. total: 25.
