On April is Financial Literacy Month (But Financial Literacy Won't Fix Everything)
“The idea that financial literacy could have prevented the advent of [collateralized debt obligations], excess leverage and shady lending practices is absurd.” So is the idea that more regulations would have prevented it.

On How Drugs Get Priced (How to Pay for Them Up to You)
@MagnoliaQueen Universities do not get involved with burdening themselves with the costs of running large scale studies to get these drugs approved. Usually, if a compound shows promise, the patent is bought from the university, with a royalty stream attached. These patent royalty streams are a much more reliable source of funds than government grants. So, in a way, India doing this is also screwing over universities and researchers.

More importantly, how much did the research to develop Gleevec cost?

On Drug Companies Save Lives (But Only If There's Money For Them)
That, and quinidine is a cheap and dirty drug. It causes thrombocytopenia, and messes with the drug levels of anything else you may be on. It was called "opium of the heart" for a reason. Why should drug companies be producing this for a loss, while opening themselves up to all kinds of bad PR/liability?

On Not Paying for Museum Admission Not Worth It

On The Sharing Economy of Streaming Services
@seaermine And the fairest way to do this would be choke points, like I described above. The arguments I'm single/I'm young/My income is X are rationalizations for a behavior. I hardly use Netflix at all. There are months that go by that all members of my household arejust too busy. Should I ask for a discount because of that?

@seaermine The assumption we are dancing around: -All Netflix content is equally valued. (We know it isn't, but it depreciates pretty quickly, so we will assume it is) -There is some limit to hours viewed where it is fair to the provider. Sooner, rather than later, you will see a content throttle on these, similar to data usage on cell phones. Hopefully, sooner. I feel like I am the last one on this planet OK with the concept of paying a fair price for quality content.

It never ends well when the mantra is "Someone else will pay full price."

On We Were Poor, And College Was The Answer to All My Problems (Right?)
More of these, and less of the "How can I possibly afford to make it on a budget in NYC" stories, please.
