I thought I was locked in the freezer at work when I was 19 once. Turns out those freezers don't actually lock, (because seriously?!! How terrifying would that be!) they just seal REALLY well behind you when you get in. I knocked, no one heard. So I panicked and disabled the door lock, which is actually pretty easy to do while you're sweating from fear inside a 22 degree box.
All of this is my mother's philosophy, which has trickled down to me. It's a hobby for her, and her home and wardrobe always look completely put together, but I know she got it all for a song... I know this because she almost always tells me how much each item I compliment costs. ;) Her hobby will be subsidized even when she plans to "retire" this spring: she's already planning to pick up substitute dental hygienist shifts so she can have $200 in her pocket every now and then to spend at Marshall's. I love coming to vist her, because the first thing she does is show me all her finds when I walk through the door, and still (I'm 30) has stuff she's bought for me lingering in the closet, often with tags still attached, designer names on the label, and a 70% markdown. We're about the same size, so I often bring things I find for her too. I used to envy the women I knew with racks upon racks of clothing, but then I realized they almost always wore the same well-loved pieces. To me, it's best to have a well-curated closet, with high quality, but well-priced items. Kudos on the great read.
Upon examination of my bank account, I spent way less than I thought I did this weekend! $85 for new party pants from Club Monaco, which I wore every. single. day. this weekend $15 for a cab ride to a friend's bbq $60 for a night out inclusive of a Grapefruit Radler, awesome Pilipino Food, and a beer at a new Chicago Brewery $0 for drinking red wine on my stoop with an old friend $19 for drinks and tip at J.Parker (by myself!) to get an unparalleled view of the Air and Water show $10 for beers and tip at Local Option, wherein I made new friends in the beer industry. Total: $189 + priceless memories and new professional connections. I'd say that's not bad!
@BananaPeel I had a permanent retainer at one point, but it caused me so many problems, I had it removed by the very same orthodontist who put it in! I now have slightly crooked bottom teeth, but I'll be damned if my mouth doesn't feel healthier for it.
But Hamm's is The Beer Refreshing!
Cold Duck! Detroit, represent!
@Morbo No way! Treasure Island on Clybourn has to be older than that Dominick's... but the treasure about that island is that no one seems to know it exists. I keep thinking I'm going to show up one day and like a desert mirage, it will have disappeared.
GIRL. Your first and second Chicago apartments are in my hood, by that cursed Dominick's with two floors. I did the exact same thing not knowing about the second foor when I moved there 5 years ago. I was so confused by that grocery store and why I couldn't buy plastic wrap.
