On Not Having Children Is Letting Us Have It All

@dudeascending But she grew up poor and that made a big impact on her. To me, it seemed like having discretionary income (and, at this point, no kids) represents freedom to her - the freedom to not have to worry about financial ruin, the freedom to (for the most part) get what she wants when she wants it, the freedom to be accepted by people. Yes, she does seem to wonder if there's something more, but she seems happy that she's free to do and buy things that for most of her life couldn't do.

On Not Having Children Is Letting Us Have It All

@aetataureate I thought this piece was refreshing – normally the ending would be something along the lines of “I learned that money isn’t everything and that XYZ matters more” Which, great, if that makes you happy but the author seems happy doing her thing as well.

On Not Having Children Is Letting Us Have It All

@dudeascending It sounds like more "not having to worry when she buys something" instead of "being able to buy anything."

On I Chose the Expensive Private University — And Got the Debt to Go With It

@aetataureate Yes and no - agree in part because NYU, like most other schools, are raising tuition because it can and that's ridiculous. However, comparing NYU as not being good enough for its costs given the program that she entered isn't a fair one. She's not going for a liberal arts major; she wanted to pursue a very specialized one that's not offered at most schools - including the less expensive one she was considering. It also sounds like she probably thought that the Tisch name would open doors.

@aetataureate If she was interested in film production, that means she went to Tisch, which is well regarded. She mentions that "[NYU] was reputed to have one of the best film programs in the country." So she may have thought at the time that the prestige was worth it.

@inspector_tiger Have you read "The World According to Monsanto"? It details some of the company's lobbying and other tactics. There was a similar case that went to the US Supreme Court recently too (forget the case name). Is the EU basing the restriction on patent law as well?

@loren smith I admit being off-budget as well - IMO, it's more honest and we're not judgmental about it. It also helps in planning future activities (e.g. will try to find a free/inexpensive activity instead if we want to see each other).

@Catface Thanks! Glad to hear that you like it; how did you pick Virgin Mobile?

So MVNOs (mobile virtual network operators) - does anyone use them? They're companies that lease wireless phone and data from major carriers and sell them to the public, often as pre-paid bundled packages (e.g. boostmobile). I have a dumbphone and would like to upgrade, but don't want to pay the monthly charges for a smartphone. Have you used an MVNO plan? If you recommend them, which companies do you recommend (pref. one that uses the Verizon network)?
