On Sorry About This Year's Bonus
Well ok, I'm in the biz and got a zero bonus this year. That means for me, I actually got a 25% pay cut for the past year after the fact (because bonuses are supposed to be for past performance). That does suck especially since it wasn't my personal performance that resulted in a zero bonus but some C level that said this whole group shouldn't get any bonus. But this is the same industry where I used to see banner ads for BMWs that said "My bonus is faster than your bonus" so I know all about the excesses. (The excesses could make a fun hate-column.) And it's fun to make snide comments about how this is a 1% problem or whatever but lots of "normal" people are affected. I know lots of admins who make around $60-70k with a $20k bonus, who didn't get a dime this year. And I know of two equities people who committed suicide in the past 5 years after losing their jobs. They were definitely 1%ers and I'm sure there were other problems there but their families are still hurt just the same. Anyway, I'm not saying have compassion for these people, there are lots of ASSHOLES here, but there are also lots of normal folks and there's no need to spit on everyone when they're down.

@Beezus If you're bringing a car, you're better off in the boroughs or even Jersey, otherwise get used to the parking spot shuffle or paying $200+ for a deck. Mass transit is good here, except for when it's not. Standard city living stuff applies, if you're on a budget, look for roommates or the boroughs. Brooklyn will have more young people though Astoria and Long Island City are good also. If you're looking into Manhattan in the Village or LES, get used to creative uses of space like closets turned into showers or bathtubs in the kitchen. And toilets in Stuy Town clog fast so if you find something there, test it out. Also we don't have washing machines or dryers in our apts so find out if they have any in the building or where the closest laundromat is. Find out of you can get a Metro card with pretax funds, like Wage Works, every little bit helps. But other than the rent and city taxes (I wonder how NYC compares?) it's pretty comparable to most cities. You can also keep yourself pretty well entertained here for cheap. Also look out for the next Awl or Hairpin get together and meet lots of people who will buy welcome drinks!

You're right, that above is basically what I think about Apple now. I've switched to a Windows 8 tablet and it's basically what I've wanted since the iPad came out.

Kobayashi is on there! I woulda died for some of these as a kid though. My friends and I used to rent out a rink and play hours of ice hockey at like midnight since it was the only time we could afford. Would've been cool to hire a NY Ranger for a group lesson.

I'm surprised it took this long for someone to do this! On a high school trip to Disney, a friend of mine got in an accident on a football field and she ended up in crutches and an air cast. After only an hour or two of skipping the lines, we were headed to the front of the monorail and overheard two young kids asking their parents if they could ride in the front also. The line was really long but my friend quietly whispered to them that they could come with us for $20. We did it a few more times there and probably Epcot also. In the end, some kids got to ride the front of the monorail, we got lunch money (poor high school kids remember) and my friend had a great time after being miserable and feeling guilty about ruining the trip. But really, these rich people should just go to the doctors who are already writing their "prescriptions" and get an air cast and crutches. They've already shameless anyway.
