@calamity Have you called them and asked for it to be increased? I used to have a $1000 limit on mine and then I wanted it increased before a big international trip and they upped it to $4000. You could also lieeee about your annual income if you wanted a bigger limit (but maybe don't do that?)
@redheaded&crazy @Jinxie Nope :( You can only buy wine/beer in grocery stores and dépanneurs in Quebec. Every other province it's liquor stores (government or private) only. Plus booze is way more expensive here. It's the major downside of Canada.
TALK ABOUT THE POINT BLANKET.
I think the letter-writer should just try it out. If it seems like it's eating up all your money, or it's stressing you out, or you find you miss having a roommate, you can just put your second bedroom up for rent again. It's a pretty low-stakes experiment!
@aetataureate I can't think of a better demonstration of a lack of empathy than thinking that it's cool to ask someone in the midst of an awful crisis "But don't you kind of agree this is a waste of money like from an utilitarian perspective?" But if I've been incorrect about what empathy means all this time I'd love to find out now before I embarrass myself further.
@fo I am pretty sure there is no value in a simplistic, stupid argument like, "African orphans vs sick American baby?" (since you pointed out it's not like you can just earmark your unspent health care dollars for international aid, or anything else). And any person with a functioning sense of empathy can recognize the difference between a theoretical sick baby and the actual baby of the person they're talking to.
That lady is a better person than me if she did not smack her friend across the face for suggesting that her daughter's life was a waste of health care resources. People who turn others' personal, heartrending circumstances into theoretical arguments are the worst.
@chic noir In Canada fathers are also eligible for parental leave-- you get 35 weeks of parental leave and that can be split between mothers and fathers. Some workplaces offer more-- my workplace provides a full year of leave.
@fo Urgggg ewww. I sort of imagined you could write up an agreement between the two of you and then both sign it and have someone notarize it. LOLZ
@chic noir Also important to remember that making workplaces better for women shouldn't just be the job of other women-- men also need to be advocating for the same things (parental leave, fair pay).
