The abrupt firing of University of Virginia president Teresa Sullivan two weeks ago by the governor-appointed Board of Visitors sparked a national discussion about higher education’s corporate interests and influences. Should non-profit universities act like for-profit universities? Should businesspeople or academics be making decisions about how to run a university? Can universities afford to be incrementalists, as Pres. Sullivan claimed to be, or do they need to make disruptive changes, like her ousters claimed?

For now: Incrementalism and academia win the day. After two weeks of protests and letter writing and phone-calling by alums, faculty, and students, President Sullivan was just reinstated in a unanimous vote.
