@CleetusVanDamme2 yes, the transcript was as you’d expect from NPR. Several union organisers all agree with each other that they’re vital and relevant and making a difference. I dozed off halfway through…

I Spend a Lot of Time Thinking About Hair Removal What About You

@breezee I did electrolysis of my bikini line and agree with breezee that it worked – 15 yrs ago and just have a few here or there, and agree that it took A LOT of sessions. I have no idea, but would guess 100.

@ATF@twitter If she drinks, a bottle of something celebratory? Champagne is always more fun if you’re not buying it yourself.

If you’re familiar with her tastes, there’s all sorts of awesome nervous system and other various biologically themed jewelry out there (see http://n-e-r-v-o-u-s.com/ for example) that might be thematically appropriate.

The Open-plan Office

My office is mostly open but has a nice variety of spaces. We have 8 desks around the perimeter of a large room, separated by IKEA cube shelves/dividers so you can choose whether or not to see your neighbor. Everyone chooses to face the center of the room rather than the walls. We have a big table for interns and projects, a tall counter we use as a standing desk sometimes, 2 comfy chairs, a conference room, and a small private office that we reserve on a calendar for conference calls, webinars or just concentrating hard. I love the flexibility of the multiple workspaces and use most of them every day – switching locations when switching tasks helps me stay focused. We are a pretty social group and tend to feed off each other, which is bad when a few people are goofy but good when we’re working intently. We also collaborate a lot, and the floor plan makes it easier to jump into conversations and add your 2 cents. Lastly, I would get really lonely in an office by myself.
I couldn’t get the article to load, so sorry if I missed the point.

Friday Estimate

My parents are visiting starting tomorrow to Tuesday, so it will be an expensive weekend.

$50 for pet supplies – the dog is out of dry food and we get the gigantor bag that is expensive but that we only have to buy every, like, 3 months.
$400 for our half of my parents’ hotel bill (we don’t have a spare room in our apartment, so we offer to split the hotel bill with relatives to encourage them to visit us).
$30 at the farmer’s market tomorrow morning for previously mentioned $6 eggs and various spring onions and kale and such.
$20 for breakfast at the gas station whose parking lot contains the farmer’s market. It’s a gas station that has kombucha on tap and some of the best breakfast tacos ever.
$??? for the rest of the time. Maybe my parents will pay for everything, but they also know that we make more than they do now, so maybe we’ll pay? I don’t know how that works. We are going to go to Dinosaur Valley State Park, the JFK museum, the art museum, a sculpture park, and whatever else they want. We’ll probably take them out for a nice dinner at this place we like that’s on the top floor of a skyscraper, which will probably be at least $200 and we’ll definitely not make them pay for that.

I’d be happy to get out of this weekend around a grand.

@germanwordfor_kichererbsen This is totally my area. I made some extra cash for a while flipping used bikes.

Price on used bikes depends HIGHLY on market. Small markets have fewer bikes and much lower prices. Somewhere bike-friendly like DC, SF, or Portland and the prices are higher and used bikes move a whole lot faster.

If you want something comfortable for going around town, a hybrid is probably a good way to go. They are slower than a road bike but aimed for comfortable riding. A new one will probably be in the $500-700 range. Used can be anywhere from $100-400, but $250 would be a price to hold out for. The good news is that lots of people who are just getting into cycling go for a hybrid, then ride it twice and let it sit in the garage until putting it on Craigslist.

TV, A La Carte

Basically, the only two reasons we have not gotten rid of our cable is that my husband insists on being able to watch the Tour De France every July, and I sleep better knowing that at any given moment of time I can watch 9 straight hours of “Law and Order:SVU” or “Criminal Minds” if the need arises.

Friday Estimate

I don’t even know. I usually hang out with my boyfriend, but he’s out of town until Sunday. I’m thinking laundry, flea market, and finishing my dress that I’ve been working on for over a month now. If I’m not too tired, maybe a hike? I don’t have plans to spend a lot of money, but there’ll be something.

@Megano! Ha! I think what this reveals is that we were overpaying for internet more than anything else. Our bill used to be $57, and now it is $114.

Promotion to bundle faster internet + cable was a hundred bucks and HBO + some other channel was another ten bucks a month (for 6 months). Plus taxes or whatever. So our total bill is over a hundred dollars but includes internet and is $67 more than we were paying before. We definitely have friends in New York who pay like $200 a month for internet, TV, DVR, special channels, the whole shebang.

Friday Estimate

This will be a normal weekend. About $150-200 for fruit and vegetables at the farmer’s market. Taking my daughter to the footy, so $30 for tickets and $20 for food (so she’ll stay for the whole game hopefully). Another $100 for groceries and $20 for hot chocolates on Sunday.

@cryptolect I also recommend disability insurance. Life insurance is helpful to your child if you or your spouse cark it, but it won’t help if you have a stroke and can’t work, etc. Disability insurance is particularly important if you’ll only have one income for awhile.

(Note that I don’t work for an insurance company. We made this decision after our daughter was born.)

When you make a will, be sure to agree and document who will raise your child if you’re both not around. If whoever will do that lives overseas, be sure to organise a passport and keep it current for your child. You’ll also want to make sure to have documentation which would allow your child to be taken out of the country.

The joys of parenthood. You’ll feel much better after organising all this, but it’s a bit intense to have to work all this out.

@blueblazes I also thought this horrible thought when listening to that Radio Lab. They only talked to two families who’s babies lived. It sounds like most don’t, and so then all the money and resources are spent, to no effect except longer suffering? I want to say it should be a fully personal choice, and money should be no object, but money is an “object” in our world, and especially in health care. Does UK National Health pay for that kind of care?

One thing that has helped me deal with my pale skin + dark facial hair combo is thinking of the facial hair not as something repellent or out of the ordinary (obviously –look how many of us have this!), but as a “style choice” –so, I choose to wax or bleach my lip as a style choice, just like I choose to use some mousse in my hair as a style choice. My non-poofy hair is not gross, it’s just my hair! But I like it better with some poof. My facial hair is not gross. I just like it better bleached blond.

When I first got cable, when I was like, 19, I actually thought it worked this way, and actually called the cable company to set up just the specialty channels and I was so confused and mad when they told me they couldn’t do it.

Oh yeah Mike Dang, you are DEFINITELY the vet. I would say that Logan is Juliette. Who is a mess, but we all kind of love her, right? (I love her, anyway).

I Spend a Lot of Time Thinking About Hair Removal What About You

Thank you so much for this article. I’m a lady with dark body hair, and at about age 18 dark, thick hairs started cropping up on my chest and neck. It’s only gotten worse (and now I have some on the sides of my face), and I thought I was totally alone in this. Sooo glad to know that I am not! Even if I don’t find a good solution, it’s great to know there is nothing wrong with me!

I Spend a Lot of Time Thinking About Hair Removal What About You

@zeytin Yes, nipple hair. Some of it colorless, and so so fine, and a few unpredictably dark. Two of my friends have divulged the existence of their nipple hair to me. And I wonder, as others have wondered here today, why do we think women are mostly hairless?

And what would the world be like if everyone assumed women had hair in all of the same places as men, if it weren’t important as a marker of gender difference for women to be mostly hairless? Sometimes I wonder if, instead of waxing, I would grow a cute little Errol Flynn mustache.

@germanwordfor_kichererbsen My roommate just had success in Chicago buying from one of those “bike and roll” type rental places. She spent about $200 with a helmet, but I unfortunately don’t know the type. She seems very pleased with it and is not a pro-biker or anything. She has ridden many many miles without discomfort. They also offered free repairs if anything went wrong for the first year I think? Just offering it as another suggestion aside from new/used bike shops.

I Spend a Lot of Time Thinking About Hair Removal What About You

I found a laser hair removal groupon a while back for laser hair removal that had a few different options for what you could get done–the last being titled “Men’s laser hair removal for full back, front, neck, and arms–including full chest and stomach.” All for $250 in Indy. With a huge stomach churn, I called the place and asked if a woman could use it. They were really surprised, but said yes. So I bought it and called to make the first appointment–the woman asked what I was getting done, and when I told her about the groupon I had she ACTUALLY GASPED and ASKED IF I WAS SURE. It was the most embarrassing moment of my life–made worse by me asking if I could add a full face session as well. Even though I’ve gone there a couple of times, I still have to tell the receptionist what I’m getting done and they’re always shocked. So depressing.

I don’t actually get my arms done, because the hair on my arms isn’t the worst thing ever, but I was slightly upset they wouldn’t let me use what would have been for my arms on a different section of my body (like armpits, which are smaller than full arms!).

So far, the results have been promising. I can’t pluck anymore, which means I have to shave, which is a tricky thing since my hair is so dark you can see it easily behind my skin. I use Amazing Makeup concealer all over my chin and parts of my cheeks, which helps a lot.

I am so amazingly relieved to know I’m not the only one out there with problems like mine, though. I don’t feel nearly as embarrassed or alone now!

@germanwordfor_kichererbsen I have a pretty slick 80′s Norco roadbike that I got at a bikeswap for CAD$180. It has aluminum tires, it is nice and light, and it’s very mechanically sound. I have noticed, though, being a life long bike person, that prices vary dramatically based on what city you live in.
Oh! I also used to work at an auction and we would handle police seized and recovered bikes and sell them, usually pretty cheaply.

@zeytin Oh my god, yes. Nipple hair. I am SO EMBARRASSED. I also have a beard that could rival those of most the men I know–horrible, coarse, extremely dark hair all over my cheeks, my chin, my lip, and my neck. I even spotted a crazy hair on my NOSE. WHAT IS THAT EVEN.

Ughhhh, I also have hair all over my belly. : (
