Everybody Wants to Do 1 Thing

let's do this thingThursday is a great day to do that 1 thing you don’t want to do but also don’t want to continue thinking about doing.

My 1 thing this week is what I suspect is a thing the other editors on this site have on their list: pay quarterly estimated taxes. How fun it is to move all that money from a savings account dedicated to taxes and into your checking account to give to the government! (SEE ALSO…)

And what about you? What’s the 1 Thing you’ve got to do?

HelloTheFuture (#5,275)

Estimated taxes are due Sept 15, so I can punt that until next Thursday, right? I will be paying the goverment $1,200.

ThatJenn (#916)

@HelloTheFuture Dumb question: does this process include state income tax, or is it just federal? And if so, how/when are state taxes paid? (I live in a state without income tax and am not a freelancer anyway, so I’m totally clueless and this just occurred to me.)

Blackbird (#2,196)

@ThatJenn I believe it’s just federal. I at least pay my state taxes separately. (I’m in Washington, so there’s no state income tax. Instead I pay the state excise tax and am required to be registered as a business, which is an annoying extra bundle of paperwork.)

readyornot (#816)

@ThatJenn it can be state, too! I have paid quarterly estimated state income taxes in California, and they have the same payment deadlines as the federal taxes. This year is a little different. I got a refund on my 2013 CA taxes, and I applied it toward my estimated liability for this year, so effectively I paid the whole year’s estimate back in April.

But I think the answer is: it depends on the state where you live and its rules, but everyone with 1099 income has to pay federal estimated taxes.

ThatJenn (#916)

@Blackbird @readyornot Thank you for satisfying my curiosity! Interesting to know how different states handle it.

Go to a slightly inconvenient store and then return home. If, upon return, I do not have a new debit card sitting in my mail box I will call PNC asking when the heck they plan to replace it.

Blackbird (#2,196)

I almost spaced on my taxes just to remember this morning on the drive in! So estimated taxes are definitely my 1 Thing today, especially since I’m old-fashioned and still mail in a check.

HelloTheFuture (#5,275)

@Blackbird wait why is everyone saying they’re due today, they’re totally due two Mondays from today, yes?

Blackbird (#2,196)

@HelloTheFuture They’re totally due two weeks from Monday (on the 15th), no worries. I just *should* get them in today because I mail mine, and I want to give them plenty of time to get there. I think other people might just be planning to get it out of the way today.

Elyse (#5,328)

Our internet was down for the last few days and in that time, I went through my smartphone’s data for the month and then some. At&t’s policy is that if you go over your plan of 2GB, for example, they automatically add 1GB of data and $10 to your bill. I saw that coming and accepted it. When I saw I was drawing close to reaching that addt’l 1GB limit, I turned off my cellular data so as to not incur another $10 on my bill. I get to work the next day, I see a text from AT&T: I’d somehow reached the limit again and would be charged another $10.

So. My 1 Thing would be to call AT&T and tell them my data was turned off so there’s no way I could’ve gone over again, but I honestly don’t know how I’d prove that. Basically it’s a “1 Thing I Wish I Could Do Because $20 Isn’t a Lot But Still.”

ThatJenn (#916)

@Elyse Ehhh. It might be worth a few minutes of your time to try. No, you may not be able to prove it (though do check the statements about your data usage on your actual phone, if possible), but (a) they might be able to tell you how to avoid having it happen again if there’s some weird setting turned on and (b) sometimes companies will waive a fee like that one time if you just take the time to call & inquire and are nice to the reps. I don’t know about AT&T specifically, but still perhaps worth a shot, so long as it won’t totally enrage you if it doesn’t work out.

@Elyse @Elyse I had the same thing happen to me with ATT. The customer servervice rep told me that there data system “isn’t live” So it might take a few hours before the true data usage is updated by the system and the warning gets to you. It sounds like you might have already gone over again by the time you turned off your phone because it looked like you were about to go over but it hadn’t been updated on your phone. Same thing about the message you were updated about it the next day.

I still say call you never know maybe you get a nicer rep then I did and they’ll waive the fee.

ThatJenn (#916)

My 1 Thing I was truly dreading for this week was to text with my tenant, who as before is waiting on some paperwork to clear before she pays her rent and didn’t actually bother to tell me so until after I contacted her to say, “uh, I guess I should get a check from you for September.” I… am looking forward to not being a landlord anymore. I’m not very good at it. This was all done yesterday and now I have a promise to pay in the form of “fingers crossed it’ll be this week!!”

Work 1 Thing: Test this damn webpage. Again. And if I can’t do that, at least do this stupid funding search I’ve been sitting on.

Personal 1 Thing: Go to the first of three public meetings regarding projects to be taken on under the 8-year county one-cent sales surtax if it passes in November. (It likely will; our county has a good record of taxing itself for well-defined projects that improve infrastructure/recreation, thank goodness.) I also applied to be on the oversight board. We’ll see if that happens. Neither of these are really things I’ve been putting off, but they do take up basically all of my personal time today until almost bedtime so I’m counting them.

Lily Rowan (#70)

@ThatJenn Oh crap, I have to pay my rent!

PicNic (#3,760)

my non-urgent one thing is to find my valium. My doctor said she sent it to CVS, CVS says they don’t have it, the nurse said she sent it to CVS again, CVS hasn’t told me it’s ready. It’s not super pressing but I have another biopsy on Tuesday and this time I’m not taking chances and need all of the drugs.

My more urgent one thing is to drop my laundry off at the laundromat because I’ve run out of clean everything.

Work on the lawnmower. And for those of you keeping score at home, still no money of any sort from the dude whose dog attacked mine.

RiffRandell (#4,774)

@TrotskyHoldsMyiPod Boooo! Time for small claims court?

@RiffRandell Possibly. First we threaten that as a step, and then… ergh. Hi ho, hi ho, it’s off to court we go :(

RachelW (#2,605)

Renew my driver’s license (by mail) so that I can avoid the DMV!

garli (#4,150)

@RachelW Whoops me too. Thanks for the reminder.

Cat Named Louise (#1,943)

Finish this syllabus (class starts next week), and then put away laundry!

andnowlights (#2,902)

I SHOULD make my one thing apologizing to my husband for the epic meltdown I had at him this morning. I’m not ready to apologize, though, because it was kind of his fault so my one thing is to go to a baby shower this afternoon and be really friendly and fun!

readyornot (#816)

@andnowlights ahh, my parents are visiting and I snapped at my dad after the SIXTH irritating thing he said before 8am. i feel terrible because they are here just to see me while I’m pregnant and to do some (nice, possibly unnecessary) things around the house. ugh, the guilt. also kind of his fault, though.

enjoy your baby shower!

readyornot (#816)

I have some charts and a memo that I need to get out at work, and it is hard to get work done with my folks around, so my 1 thing this week is going to be work rather than personal. I’ll also mail my estimated taxes, though.

ronswansonluva (#6,465)

My one thing is to do some handwashing from the trip I returned from.. two weeks ago? Includes adhesive bras and swimsuits (including a crochet monokini, my one true love). I guess another one thing will be looking up how to wash a crochet monokini, let me know if you have tips!

EmilyAnomaly (#4,238)

@ronswansonluva Hand wash in cool water using baby shampoo or gentle detergent. Rinse in cool water, gently squeeze out the water, lay on a towel to dry

Source: my mom teaches FACS

RiffRandell (#4,774)

@ronswansonluva Totally thought you needed to wash your hands. Ewwwww. Glad you are instead washing a monokiki.

ronswansonluva (#6,465)

@RiffRandell hahaha! you’re so right. i guess i am hand-washing? washing by hand?

ronswansonluva (#6,465)

@EmilyAnomaly that’s so helpful, thank you!

A Nonny Mouse (#6,293)

OH GOD right estimated taxes. This is my first year doing it because the university decided they didn’t feel like doing the withholding from my fellowship anymore. Can anyone tell me why the deadlines are spaced out so weird? I accidentally paid my 2nd quarter taxes a month late because I was like TWELVE DIVIDED BY FOUR IS THREE! EVERY THREE MONTHS! and then it was June which is TWO MONTHS from April!

EmilyAnomaly (#4,238)

My one thing was to email our admin about the ergonomic modifications recommended for my work desk by a specialist. It’s been over a month since the request was initially made. Working for a giant corporation=so much red tape to get a non-broken desk chair and a mouse that keeps my forearm from going numb. On one hand, I feel like I’m being a pest asking yet again for these things, but on the other, the company has to provide a safe work environment.

garli (#4,150)

@EmilyAnomaly Woah I hope you’re documenting when the requests were made and the numbness in your arm.

Julie (#5,374)

My one thing is to pack my suitcase! I’m going to visit my family in Pennsylvania this weekend. I also have laundry and some other chores to get done before I leave tomorrow afternoon.

JMC (#7,029)

My one thing was going to be to get my daughter signed up for swim lessons in October. But for some reason I need to do that in person, so it’ll have to be done this weekend. I made a dentist appointment instead, which I’ve been meaning to do for about 6 months now so I feel accomplished!
