No But Really, Do 1 Thing

Thursday is a great day to do that 1 thing you don’t want to do but also don’t want to continue thinking about doing.

I just made myself open a piece of certified mail from the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance. Did I want to? No. Was it kind of painful and scary? Yes. Was I inspired by the blue skies and sunshine? Sure. Appparentttllyyyyyyyy if I am reading these 5000 pieces of paper correctly, I owe the state $480 and they are prepared to take it from my paychecks if I don’t start paying them back. CALM DOWN NEW YORK STATE, I’M ON IT. Anyway, calling them now.

I secured a wedding ceremony site! That’s harder than it sounds when dealing with the Chicago Park District!

Allison (#4,509)

@fivetoolmike unless you’re George Lucas

My 1 Thing was to call my apartment complex about our leaking garbage disposal. Done!

annecara (#1,914)

I need to fill out and mail my forms to tell the City of Philadelphia that my small business made $0 last year, I don’t owe taxes on it, please leave me alone.

readyornot (#816)

@annecara i hate the nagging city small business taxes letters. hatehatehate.

annecara (#1,914)

@readyornot Philly’s small business/business privilege tax is such a mess, seriously.

readyornot (#816)

@annecara i only have experience with Los Angeles, but the level of incompetence and bureaucracy astonished me over and over.

Stina (#686)

The power of the 1 thing post: It reminded me to go and check whether my request for a prescription extension had been approved and it had been.

Allison (#4,509)

I need to suck it up and file my essentially completed taxes and pay a pile of money. SIGH. And physically deliver my condo dues to my management company becuase Paylease deactivated my account, so the autopay did not auto anything. Thanks, guys.

ThatJenn (#916)

Profesh one thing: re-up my cost principles & sexual harassment training.

Personal one thing: clean all the dishes and make space in the corner for the dishwasher that will BE HERE TOMORROW OMG it’s been such a long four years without one.

readyornot (#816)

logan oh my goodness GOOD FOR YOU. a small 1 Thing, a huge leap forward.

my 1 thing is to take a bag of clothes to buffalo exchange. it is always so embarrassing if they only want a couple of items!

Heather F G (#6,074)

@readyornot Seriously. It’s like, “What, they not GOOD enough for you?”

annecara (#1,914)

@readyornot Uggghh Buffalo Exchange, I don’t think I’ve shopped there since they rejected my bag of clothes :(

moreadventurous (#4,956)

@readyornot Last time I went the did buy like two things, but rejected SO MANY. Anyway, the girl looked at me and said, “We take a lot of these brands, but these have just been… well loved.” Major eyeroll.

I did one of my one things and finished the initial planning for my friend’s bachelorette weekend. I did not do my other thing – schedule day care tours – for two reasons – (1) very close friend going through very bad things so I paused life for that because duh and (2) I’m now starting to realize I hate my job right now and I might just take a break from the work force for a few months post baby any way so no need for daycare and omg what am I doing with my life does anyone know please help?

My one thing this weekend is (1) start doing spring cleaning clear out in anticipation of moving on May 1 and (2) fix my voicemail on my cell phone which has been broken for three weeks. Who leaves voicemails any more anyway?

LookUponMyWorks (#2,616)

Clean all the things, bake, change sheet. Continue to contemplate finishing taxes.

I FINALLY called my student loan servicer about my supposed non-payment (I made a payment, it just wasn’t the full “amount” because I hadn’t recertified my Income-Based Repayment) to work out that whole mess.

I also FINALLY brought a few boxes of crap to Goodwill, oh and finished watching that movie ;)

Soon as this ep of Mad Men is over on Netflix, I’ll take out the garbage and do some laundry I suppose. I don’t normally have Thursdays off.

Heather F G (#6,074)

Does dragging myself out of bed and around this Umbrella Destroying Downtown Wind Tunnel in the rain count? If not maybe my one thing will be acquiring one of those old lady plastic rain bonnets so I don’t get too drenched on the way to and from work.

Just kidding. I have to finally call and cancel this credit card protection thing I signed up for because they promised me a $20 gift card to Loft, which has been received and spent. I know, I know.

calamity (#2,577)

My boring work-related 1 Thing: I forgot how to do a minor part of my job because I haven’t done it since September and have to ask the person who taught me how to do it to teach me again. Whoops. This time I promise I’ll write it down.

andnowlights (#2,902)

My one thing is to go to bed EARLY tonight (like, 8:30) so that I will get up and go to the gym in the morning. I’ve skipped the last 3 mornings and that is not healthy behavior.

This seems like a slacker 1 thing, but I really can’t think of anything else and I am so tired.

Heather F G (#6,074)

@andnowlights Going to the gym first thing in the morning and the word “slacker” are heretofore DISALLOWED from being used in a sentence together.

Stina (#686)

@Heather Funk@facebook The gym is open first thing in the morning? That is a myth, [stolen line] like unicorns and bridges.

andnowlights (#2,902)

@Heather Funk@facebook My 1 thing isn’t going to the gym, though, ha ha, it’s to go to bed early!

callmeprufrock (#5,158)

I completed financial aid exit counseling and managed not to cry at work. Woo!

Stina (#686)

@callmeprufrock Is not crying at work a regular goal? Oh hon for what it means lots of sympathy from a stranger on the internet.

callmeprufrock (#5,158)

@Stina Crying while dealing with student loans is, and I happened to be dealing with that mire at work today. But thank you! *hug*

Caitlin with a C (#3,578)

My 1 thing is to text my friend that I was supposed to Skype with last weekend (but we both forgot). Not being a jerk!

BillfoldMonkey (#1,754)

Is it cheating to say that my 1 thing is getting my to-do list down to zero items, if that actually means doing like 8 things?

Stina (#686)

@BillfoldMonkey I would say that is super extra special accomplishment of 1-thingness rather than cheating.

RiffRandell (#4,774)

I think I will call the number on a Capital One credit card application and see if I can convince them to stop sending me applications. My dad would be proud (since I don’t shred the cc applications like he’d prefer). I also plan to clean surfaces in my house, maybe vacuum if I feel ambitious.

erinep (#4,236)

Welp my one thing from last week was to make a list of all of the tasks I’ve done at work ever, and send it to my hiring assistant friend along with my resume for her to shape into something better. I did start it and get pretty far, but a) I’ve been having a hard time finding focus for it and b) I have had a hard time doing my job as it should be done for over a year because my work environment just plain sucks and so I am having a hard time remembering every little thing I should be listing. So, I am re-upping my One Thing. I need to get this done because there’s some decent job apps I want to finish by the end of the weekend.

CaddyFdot (#2,686)

Thank you for this Do One Thing! I actually called chiropractors and magically have an appointment for tomorrow morning with someone right near my office who takes my insurance. This has been on my to-do list for a few months.

virginia apple (#3,120)

I did mine! I had to go to the effing bank because I applied for a credit card online but they wanted me to come in with proof of identity (why?? Never had to do that for credit card before). On the phone they were like, well you can make copies of your ID and fax them to us…hahahaha right.

emily_white (#6,326)

I mailed some Christmas cards (!) I kept forgetting to buy international postage for.

Next week: actually mailing in my taxes. I’ve usually been able to do them for free online, but now I have a real job–what is the normal way to mail in taxes? Registered mail? Crossing one’s fingers?

Allison (#4,509)

@emily_white I’ve only ever done it regular first class while having a disproportionate level of faith in the Chicago post offices.

PS excellent avatar

My 1 Thing last week was to ask for a grad school recommendation…and I did it! Even though sending a simple email somehow took me five hours!
I realized during my procrastination process that my dread was due to the fact that the professor had wanted me to go to grad school in her field, and I am applying to grad school in a somewhat related yet different field, and I thought that she was going to question that decision. But she didn’t!
So now my 1 Thing is to get started on my personal statements. My plan is do one a month, every month until December….hopefully that should make it less horrible.
