Career Seriously Have Because of TV

@Meaghano Yeah, I just want Donna’s life trajectory. (EDIT: Welp, except for the weird employer-employee relationship stuff. Could care less for that.)
@Meaghano Donna and Pepper Potts both make me want to be a kick ass personal assistant. Unfortunately both have weird employer/employee relationship business. But apart from that I want to be one/both of them.
@gl what about Margaret from the West Wing? Ha, ok I don’t want to be her but she is the best.
@Meaghano Well. Mrs. Landingham is the true best! But Margaret is great. I want to learn to sign the president’s signature too.
@gl “I’d probably end up doing some time for that.” Also TRUE re: landingham
@Meaghano I do also want to be Charlie. A little bit.
I’m a lawyer and will proudly admit I went to law school so I could become an FBI agent (a law degree is one way you can become an agent). It is with more reservation that I will admit I wanted to be an FBI agent because of X-files.
@Tuna Surprise Did it work?
@garli Well, s/he could tell you but then… you know the rest
what I wouldn’t give for Ally McBeal’s career trajectory (minus the series finale)
@wrappedupinbooks I skipped the last season and feel I am better for it.
you are. Although I did really enjoy the episode where Ling gets a Judge Judy type show. The one bright spot in an abysmal season of flailing and wasting my precious boy James Marsden
When I first met my freshman year roommate she said she was thinking of majoring in forensics because she liked CSI and I remember thinking that people who actually work in forensics probably hate that. (We didn’t stay in touch but I don’t think she actually ended up studying forensics.)
[edit to respond to tags: I also spent all weekend watching The Fall. It was not as good as Broadchurch.]
@astauff One of the most offensive subway conversations I ever overheard was a father talking about his high school daughter and how she was an idiot for wanting to go into forensics and “just because people are space ship captains on TV that doesn’t mean it’s a good career choice” and then some stuff about how she should marry rich because it was the only way she was going to get ahead in life. And I was just sitting there thinking: even if she doesn’t end up going into forensics, she’ll have to take tons of chemistry and bio and other things that are pretty useful even if she wound up in a different career! And, like, maybe people ten years ago in forensics hated that people wanted to get into the field because of TV, but I bet that there are a fair few who are working in it now who got there because it seemed like a cool career on TV.
@gl Now I’m imagining a whole generation of forensic scientists that are the sciencey equivalent of my generation of DC people who came here because of West Wing (so many of us. Oh my god.).
@bowtiesarecool I imagine people who went to DC because of the West Wing have had their dreams crushed a lot harder than people who went into forensics hoping it would be like CSI.
@astauff [Solution: watch the movie The Fall instead.]
@astauff Yep, I totally started a PhD program in political science because of the West Wing. Quickly got out when I realized I wasn’t actually CJ Cregg. :(
@jennonthego Think of how many ill-fated law school careers can be traced back to that show. THEY’RE ALL LAWYERS. Up until fairly late in undergrad, I seriously thought that was what you had to do to get into politics!
Ditto Scully. Also Veronica Mars/private investigator.
You forgot “fixer” a la Olivia Pope and guidance counselor/principal/mother extraordinaire a la Tami Taylor.
@halloliebchen … she becomes PRINCIPAL? Oh man, that’s awesome. /signed, I know I’m several years behind
@bgprincipessa in an COMPLETELY nonsensical career move, yes but who cares? Tami is the greatest
@bgprincipessa YES. I am just at the beginning of season 3, so sorry for the spoiler, but I figured I was the last human being on Earth watching this show so late.
@Allison Seriously. Why would you go there. Unless it was a pay raise for the Taylor family who were hurting in Season 2 after Eric left TMU and took the pay cut … (I am way too involved in this show right now).
also: advertising exec. mad men :/
@anotherCaitlin Caitlins unite!
HA. Watching ER actually convinced me that I did not actually want to be a doctor. Prior to that show I’d had my heart set on it. Instead I became a scientist. :)
Oh man, can we please talk about how awesome True Detective is?
@Derbel McDillet SO AWESOME
@Logan Sachon Really, the opening song has been in my head for like two weeks now, and I’m totally ok with that.
@Logan Sachon My dad sent me a text after last night’s episode that read something like “This show is amazing!” My mom sent me a text that read “I wish I hadn’t seen any of that.”
@Derbel McDillet I’ve only seen the first two but it’s so interestingly done. The pacing between the two timelines and Matthew McConaughey is just KILLING it.
@Allison I can’t wait to go home and see the third episode tonight! I feel like I’m not hearing enough about a show that’s starting out so good! Although I’m not sure what career it could make you consider- detective (okay) court clerk banging Woody Harrelson (if it comes with her insane rack, sure) underage trailer park prostitute (she seemed like an okay madame but still, not ideal), ritualistic serial killer (no thanks.)
I spent the entire weekend watching queer as folk and not packing my apartment so that was good. I don’t think QAF made me want to grow up and be something. It taught me many things but not careery things
i dream of becoming a caterer, just so i can party down.
Orphan Black is the BEST! seriously.
