I Don’t Know About You But I’m Feeling Like Doing 1 Thing

Thursday is a great day to do that 1 thing you don’t want to do but also don’t want to continue thinking about doing.

My 1 Thing for today is to call my landlord to make sure he got my rent check because he hasn’t deposited it yet and he usually deposits it on the 2nd or 3rd. I’ve been putting it off all week because if he says no then I have to go to the office to drop off another one and I don’t want to.

My 1 Thing is to call the Multnomah County court system about the ~$400 bill they sent me for my failure to appear in court for a traffic ticket that I was apparently given but never actually received, and then my 2 Thing is to call the DMV to make sure my license doesn’t get suspended. I wonder what I did.

ocello (#5,234)

@Bill Fostex My 1 Thing was also related to the legal system! I got to go to the County Sheriff’s office and give them lots o’ forms so they can garnish my former landlord’s bank account for the money he tried to take from my security deposit. You’re not really having fun until you get the Sheriff involved.

My 1 think was to call my hospital and find out if I qualify for any financial assistance!

I had cancer a few years ago (all ok now), but I have to go to a yearly appointment that ends up costing between $1,500 and $4,000 depending on what insurance will pay/what tests they do. I recently aged off my parents insurance and definitely can’t afford to pay that much every year out of pocket since my crappy insurance won’t cover it.

I hesitated to call because I was afraid the financial counselors would be like “haha that’s nothing call me back when you have $100,000 in debt!” BUT I sucked it up and called today and found out that I qualify for a 50% discount on all services AND possibly can get a 50% refund on the bill I paid for my last appointment.

On a side note: has the Billfold done any articles about young adults/cancer/insurance? I would love to participate in something like that :-)

andnowlights (#2,902)

@Madeline Shoes I’d love to read something like that. I have absolutely no idea how much cancer costs (with or without insurance) and no concept of… anything like that!

ThatJenn (#916)

@Madeline Shoes I’d love to hear what you have to say on the subject, and I’m also really glad you get a discount now! I know it’s still a LOT but it’s always good to hear about hospitals being semi-halfway-kinda-reasonable.

Madeline Shoes (#1,324)

@andnowlights I had no idea, either, until I got on my own insurance and got my first bill. I thought it was a mistake, so I called the hospital and ordered copies of every bill my parents had gotten from the time I was diagnosed and I was totally blown away. Hundreds of thousands of dollars and that was without major surgery or radiation for an “easy to treat” cancer.

I can’t imagine what it would have been like without my parents awesome insurance…

Madeline Shoes (#1,324)

@ThatJenn I was totally surprised. I found out that if you make less than $45,000 as a single person/single parent (I was treated at a Children’s hospital even though I was diagnosed at 21), you qualify for SOME kind of discount on a sliding scale. They do NOT advertise this!

Tatiana (#194)

My 1 thing today was to order a new Clipper Card because I left mine somewhere (not sure where) and am getting tired of paying for the bus & train with cash.

CaddyFdot (#2,686)

@Tatiana I love Clipper! I don’t ride the bus often (Caltrain yes), but when I did I always forgot to make sure I had change. Now I don’t have to have change because I always have my Clipper card in my wallet.

la_di_da (#1,425)

I did all my one things! Woo! I called DTV and got them to resend the return box for my old cable box so that they won’t charge me. I unpacked my new apartment (mostly)and now all I have to do is get addressed for my holiday card list (cause i’m old like that).

Liz the Lemur (#3,125)

My hometown dentist emailed me and squeezed me in for an appt at 8:40 am the Monday before Christmas! That’s one less thing.
Two things I still have to do: sign up for my company’s FSA and budget for it, buy Christmas presents.

ThatJenn (#916)

I emailed/called my dentist to get the MSDS for my sealants, because I just now realized that sealants usually have titanium (as TiO2) in them for coloring, and I’m allergic, and maybe THAT’s why everything has been hurting for a year and a half. Guess what?!? I was totally right.

Not sure yet what we’ll do about it, but at least we can talk about it when I go in next month.

avidbiologist (#3,545)

This week has been a good one for Things, I guess I’ve been saving them up for this time- I FINALLY emailed about renter’s insurance which I’d been waffling over (I don’t even have a lease and I was worried that would be a problem)and the lady got back to me promptly and I got a discount through work and I paid it in one lump sum for the year, so that’s DONE, and then I got a carbon monoxide monitor because I’m paranoid (but I haven’t set it up yet), so that’s half done, and then in 20 mins I am meeting with someone from HR to talk about tuition reimbursement for a grad program I’m looking into, so that’s…not done, but the ball is now rolling.

Some moments I function like an Adult and in my mind it averages out the times where I refuse to leave my laptop and bed for anything short of bathroom trips and dire hunger.

LookUponMyWorks (#2,616)

1. Got my nails did for the company holiday party tomorrow at lunch. This was, kinda embarrassingly, my primary 1 Thing for the day. Priorities, you know.

2. Call Verizon tonight and ask them to remove the early contract cancellation fee from my account AGAIN. They agreed to correct this before Thanksgiving, but I just got another bill with the erroneous $120 fee on it.

My 1 Thing today was to (finally) call my federal student loan servicer and see if I could get my monthly payments reduced so that I can 1.) put the difference toward my smaller private loan and 2.) take advantage of the public service student loan forgiveness, which my previous repayment plan didn’t qualify for. It was actually really easy and they reduced my payments to something that is much less of a financial burden every month.

andnowlights (#2,902)

I have too many “one thing”s at this point. My to-do list is completely overwhelming at this point in my life, and it’s not even holiday stuff. Today I am going to clean up my floordrobe, clean out the trunk/mess we use a coffee table and… maybe return my library books if I need to get out of the house after work. OH! And start sewing the tote bags I’m making for my grandmother for Christmas. And make a plan for my day off tomorrow!

2for1cheesecake (#3,591)

My 1 thing = reserving a one-week rental for the airport next week. This will save me over $100 in parking fees! Currently waiting for the rental company to return my call. Other than that, I just had a job interview so now going to do laundry and watch TV aaaaaaaallllll afternoon.

Allison (#4,509)

I need to bug my brother about what he wants for Christmas. And check with my mom to see if anything else is on my dad’s list because then I’ll be DONE. (until I see something else cool that I have to pick up for someone)

RachelG8489 (#1,297)

My one thing: go to Bed Bath & Beyond on my way to tonight’s holiday party (progressive politically-oriented people in NYC throw a LOT of holiday parties) to buy a cheap set of twin sized sheets. At work, we’re donating to a local homeless shelter’s Christmas wish lists, and apparently they need a lot of sheets, so we’re all doing either cash to buy sheets or sheets, and I have a BB&B coupon.

Stina (#686)

I need to contact my sister and nail down a day to get together for Christmas. This is because my brother in law is a postal worker and contrary to popular belief, they do work on holidays. We phone tagged last night so hopefully a definite date will be determined tonight.

jennonthego (#5,366)

I did my one thing and emailed my neurologist about a new medication even though I’m completely terrified that my headaches are actually a brain tumor or something else heinous. But done. Thanks!

Caitlin with a C (#3,578)

Oh sweet Jesus who let it be Thursday already

My 1 thing is to update my resume so my mentor can look over it, because I promised, even though I’m not looking for a job right now.

OR my 1 thing is to finish buying Christmas presents because it is almost Christmas. (This is exactly why I have Amazon Prime.)

moreadventurous (#4,956)

I finally made my appointment for a dermatologist because I have like eight new moles? Terrified.

echolikebells (#3,272)

My one thing was a work thing, but I left early (sick). So my one thing is to go to the grocery store. My secondary one thing is to complete a grad school application (alternative thing: tweak my resume and write a cover letter).

Maybe I should make my one thing next week be “find a therapist,” because I’m only today noticing that the desire to never get out of my bed ever for anything is becoming more and more persuasive, and it is only the middle of December (not even truly winter yet!!!).

AitchBee (#3,001)

@echolikebells Even though they’re colder, I think January and February are easier because the days start getting longer (starting December 21! So soon!)

echolikebells (#3,272)

@AitchBee THAT is a great point, and I am so excited for days to get longer!
