Good King Wenceslas Did 1 Thing

Thursday is a great day to do that 1 thing you don’t want to do but also don’t want to continue thinking about doing.

My 1 Thing is the best 1 Thing, as today it is: Use my dad’s credit card number that he just gave me to to buy myself some Christmas presents and send them to my parents’ house so they can wrap them and then we can all be surprised on Christmas morning. I mean! I resisted this method of Christmas wish fulfillment for a really long time because … I didn’t want to rob my mom of the real fun experience of going to the mall five thousand times to try to decipher what, “I don’t know, don’t get me anything, I don’t need anything, but maybe some shirts or sweaters, I don’t know, you know what I like” meant. Anyway, this is much more humane, for her. Although I’m kind of paralyzed because I haven’t been on the Shopping Part of the Internet in so long. There’s so much. It’s so shiny. Want. All. Things.

I need to book my cab to the airport tomorrow morning, but that means admitting how early I have to get up tomorrow morning, so I’m still in denial.

I need to get gourmet candies for my dad for Christmas since I ate the ones I bought for him last week. I also need to manage not to eat these before I see him next Tuesday. I am the worst person.

@EmilyAnomaly lovely post. I like it a lot

I would say “I need to pack” like an optimistic person who is multiple days ahead of schedule, but let’s be honest. My 1 thing is “I need to send out all my Christmas cards and finish buying presents.”

I need to actually finish my book report for class that was due last week, so I can work on my final paper and turn it in on Monday.

Bad/good news: I thought of a really good present for my husband just last night. I thought I was done shopping about 2 weeks ago but guess not.

Good news: Got Christmas with my family scheduled and dish to bring chosen.

I need to call the Kaiser advice nurse line to ask questions about travel immunizations/meds.

readyornot (#816)

@Marissa Kaiser has travel clinics! They are walk in. And they just follow the CDC guidelines, which you can look up online.

I went to the DMV! And got my car registered and got shiny new plates and a new license (well, they’re mailing the new license, I’ve got a temporary piece of paper masquerading as my license now)!!! I feel so accomplished!

Still need to pack for my upcoming drive and clean.

I need to alphabetize and file a crapton of paperwork, because if I don’t do it today it’ll have to wait until January, at which point I will not have time to file because of the rest of my holiday backlog, and then I will postpone the filing until, like, March, at which point I will have even more stuff to file and it will take six hours to do it all.

I hate filing.

LookUponMyWorks (#2,616)

@annecara Put on some jams, if you can, and just go to town on that filing! I find music helps me zone out and just get-it-done! when it’s a task I might otherwise put off. And put off. And put off some more.

annecara (#1,914)

@LookUponMyWorks I wish I could! No music allowed for me, I’m afraid. Maybe I can hum.

I need to get through this work day! I am checked out for vacation already, but I have the rest of today and tomorrow to get through.

I also need to start sewing the tote bags I’m making for my grandmother for Christmas. I keep putting it off.

LookUponMyWorks (#2,616)

@andnowlights I have gotten nothing done except my One Thing, today! Totally checked out. Doesn’t help that everyone else in my office has physically checked out…the place is deserted.

andnowlights (#2,902)

@LookUponMyWorks My bosses are distractable too. At one point my director and I were talking about how to respond to a “social justice” email (regarding the “academy” and the staff that do the lower paid jobs on campus like janitorial services and food service) and somehow ended up talking about sitcoms and slapstick movies. Most conversations we’ve had have gone that direction. It’s time to be done.

echolikebells (#3,272)

@andnowlights I am in this situation with you! Tomorrow I’ll be one of three people in our entire building. Today was hard enough, tomorrow will be a catastrophe. My one saving grace here is that the boss will be gone, so at least she won’t see me struggling with productivity.

andnowlights (#2,902)

@echolikebells I expect my bosses won’t be around today either. I have one big project that I really need to do, but it might not happen because I expect I will just not be feeling it. Maybe I’ll take it with me for when I need a brak from my parents.

honey cowl (#1,510)

I was hoping for a picture of Hugh Grant with this one.

readyornot (#816)

@honey cowl WITH Natalie.

RiffRandell (#4,774)

Somewhere between tonight’s party and tomorrow’s party (and work) I need to pack from my Saturday Departure. Right. So far I have packed all presents and all dirty clothes (our washer is broken, so eventually I will have the clothing I need once I’ve used my parent’s washer).

RachelW (#2,605)

After months of thinking about it, I decided that today would be the day that I would wake up at 5:15 and go to the pool before work instead of going after work (or not going after work because I am too tired from work). I did it, and it was really not terrible at all, and now I don’t have to argue with myself about going to the pool after work. I am pretty sleepy though.

readyornot (#816)

I need to pack. And put the last coat of woodstain on the bookcase I have spent the last week refinishing.

echolikebells (#3,272)

I need to get tissue paper so I can wrap the few presents I have that need wrapping. That’s as ambitious as I get right now.
