Wanted: Someone to Do Four Jobs and Have No Life Outside of Work

This job ad on LinkedIn is making the rounds on social media as being The Worst.

We’re terrible at work-life balance. Although work is pretty much your life, we do our absolute best to make sure that work is as awesome as possible so you at least enjoy each and every day here.

And the job in question:

We are quite literally looking for a person that can do four jobs: Web Development, Software Development, Sys Admin, and the (dreaded) GENERAL IT for us here that need help configuring a firewall for a dev kit, etc. Sorry, I know that’s the WORST, but it’s absolutely part of the gig.

So yeah, we know that’s a lot to ask of a person, but all of us here work tremendously hard to do a lot of things, and if you’d like to be at the technical epicenter of it all and don’t mind having a really bad sense of work-life balance, this is the job for you.

Any takers?

But it’s all good, because they’re “not a terribly money-motivated group.” Okay.

Have you guys done a feature on the economics of webcomics? There aren’t that many creators who have been able to turn it into a full-time gig, and it’s really interesting to me how Penny Arcade has become such an enormous success.

@acid burn Yeah, also wtf to this:”You should have no problems working in a creative and potentially offensive environment.” Am I the only one who read that as, if you are a woman, pretty much expect to put up with misogynistic bullshit?

AitchBee (#3,001)

@sherlock From Penny Arcade? SURELY NOT

@acid burn I’d like to know how Jeph Jacques survives, especially since he has a pattern of several unscheduled posting absences a year, doesn’t typically draw much in advance, and comic related stuff is his sole income.

acid burn (#113)

@Aunt Scar Yeah! He’s talked about it on his tumblr a little, but I’d like to hear more about it, too. I get the impression that his income is basically entirely ad revenue. I bet he’d be into an interview; he’s very candid about his life in general.

@sherlock (Are you a PA reader?) I didn’t read it as misogynistic specifically, but only because they can kind of offend a lot of people. This is not saying “oh, they’re not offensive because they make fun of men too!” but more like, no, seriously, they offend a lot of people. Like rape survivors. And transpeople.

So, mostly just as bad or even worse than your reading.

sherlock (#3,599)

@gyip I’m not a reader all – that was just a random guess, and I fully admit that I have no concrete reason whatsoever to think that’s what it meant. Mainly just a suspicion based on the wording used, and generalizations from the experiences of many women in comp sci/tech positions similar to the one advertised.

gyip (#4,192)

Ah, hell, accidentally deleted my comment again.

At least PA is honest? If completely unethically? There are sooo many companies that try to sell you on “extras” and many more who don’t acknowledge work-life balance, in industries often where it’s just a given.

That said, it seems the person they want with all these skill sets can’t possibly exist, so there’s that!

@gyip But I can guarantee they will get a whole STRING of people willing to kill themselves trying. I parted ways with the PA/PAX fandom machine awhile back, but oh man are there a lot of people who would be willing to give up everything to fix Robert Khoo’s computer on the regular.

Aunt Scar (#5,377)

What I thought was hilarious was the whole “we’re not money-motivated” part combined with “we’d rather invest in things that make your day to day work-life great.”

Hmm, how about hiring a part timer to take some of that work off the plate so the person you hire doesn’t go crazy? Or are you going to build a intra-company personal bedroom, so after workig 18 hours your 4 hatted worker can just fall into bed? Cater all their meals? Turn the company into a compound like Facebook and Google? Because free energy drinks and foosball do not make underpaying your staff and giving them too much do not make a workplace great.

it’s Penny Arcade – this is the equivalent of a Vogue job for nerds (and i say that lovingly)- there are a lot of people in that skill set who would LOVE to say they work there, regardless of the hours required. that’s how they get away with it.

Lily Rowan (#70)

@guenna77 For male nerds only, no? My impression of them is Not Good.

Laurabean (#3,040)

@Lily Rowan Ditto. I wouldn’t work for them even if they did have reasonable expectations and were offering a reasonable salary. I also wouldn’t associate with anyone who worked for them. Boycott 4lyf.

TheDilettantista (#1,255)

Penny Arcade has been making a lot of PR slips these last few months…see the return of the Rape Wolves from PAX.

Stina (#686)

@TheDilettantista I will just take the hint and not Google that. Ever.

Stina (#686)

I’m reading the description as “Do four times the work for little pay in order to duct tape our flimsy business model together. But you can totally wear jeans at work Dude. And we’ll call you Dude. Cool amiright?”
