1 Thing is Miserable and Magical

Thursday is a great day to do that 1 thing you don’t want to do but also don’t want to continue thinking about doing.

My 1 Thing for this week is to update my resume. I did this a few weeks ago and then I sent it to a friend who sent it to her friend who said, “This would be a good resume if you were applying to be a kindergarten teacher.” (I am not applying to be a kindergarten teacher.) (Actually I am not applying for anything at all because I don’t have an updated resume.) (I do have a cover letter though, want to read it: “I will do literally whatever you want me to do in exchange for an amount of money that will allow me to pay my bills and also go out to dinner two to three times a week. Please find my resume attached.”)

@Logan (or anyone else with applicable experience) do you have freelancer on your resume? If so, how did you put it on there? Trying to decide if I should add it since it is a side gig for me.

Also, my 1 thing is to pay my renter’s insurance renewal fee. I wrote the check this morning, just need to mail it when I get home!

@Heather Yamada-Hosley Depends on how you phrase it but I’ve found it valuable. I actually had an LLC so I could claim some administrative experience even though I never really worked in an office…

WayDownSouth (#3,431)

@Heather Yamada-Hosley I think it depends on the actual phrasing. In some cases, freelancing (or consulting or activism) is another word for being unemployed. In other cases, it’s an actual paying gig. If you do use the term, I suggest including text to demonstrate that you gained practical experience this way.

@stuffisthings Thank you! I’ll try to get the phrasing right to maximize its usability. :)

@WayDownSouth Thanks! Since the dates I’ve been doing freelance overlap with dates I have a job, the unemployment thing shouldn’t be an issue. I will try to get the description right to show it was by choice and provided useful experience.

@Heather Yamada-Hosley Some good things to mention, depending what job you’re applying for, are how the work taught you to be client-focused; manage multiple projects; and I guess you could apply it to sales too (as far as seeking out new clients etc.)

@stuffisthings Mostly community management/content development type positions. Thank you for the thoughts, will definitely use them!

qwer1234 (#4,140)

@Heather Yamada-Hosley Yeah, I found that just changing the phrasing was huge. I realized I had been running an actual business of my own, so setting one up legally and talking about it in a different way, it lent an incredible amount of legitimacy to my period between “proper jobs.” I think it also helps people that have no concept of what “freelancing” might mean contextualize it in a way they can better understand. If in the absence of a better choice you created your own job, that’s something amazing and you should totally get credit for it!

CaddyFdot (#2,686)

I did a One Thing I’ve been meaning to do for more than a year! I signed up for an online account to view my retirement plans. Then I decided to up my contributions by a couple percent, since I’m making a bit more money than I was before last month. By one firm’s estimation, I am on track with the recommended 0.5x of my salary saved at this age.

I picked my retirement funds when I started at this job 9 years ago, right out of college, and haven’t looked at them since. Reading The Billfold over the last year or so has seriously affected my interest in my long term financial situation, so thanks!

andnowlights (#2,902)

@CaddyFdot The online account is a blessing and a curse. I try to stay away from mine except for once a month, otherwise I obsess.

Someday I will have a real job with a real salary and my 10% (5% from me, 5% employer match) will be real money.

CaddyFdot (#2,686)

@andnowlights Ya, I can see that temptation. I think though, that since I ignored it for almost a decade and it did just fine, that I won’t feel that need too strongly. I plan to check it out again after my company completes the upcoming transfer of record keeping from joint Vanguard/TIAA-CREF to 100% T-C, but then ignore it again until open enrollment season next year.

EvanDeSimone (#2,101)

I wish all cover letters could read like that. Mine sort of does actually. My one thing this week is to buy a new curtain rod to replace the one I broke so that I can stop covering my bathroom window with an old robe. Please enjoy that brief macabre look into my personal life.

@EvanDeSimone Please enjoy that brief macabre look into my personal life.

can’t, there’s an old robe in the way

aetataureate (#1,310)

@EvanDeSimone Without a curtain rod . . . Is the robe just . . . Taped up there? Or what? TELL US

EvanDeSimone (#2,101)

@aetataureate I’m glad you asked! It’s cleverly hung on the weird hook things that used to hold the curtain rod. It falls down whenever i take a shower which is, obviously, super convenient.

aetataureate (#1,310)

@EvanDeSimone How come you can’t hang a curtain on those same hooks? This is my favorite thing that’s happened today.

EvanDeSimone (#2,101)

@aetataureate The ring thingies don’t reach to hooks or something. I don’t know i was half asleep when i tried to fix this.

bgprincipessa (#699)

@EvanDeSimone There are way too many times in life when my only solid explanation for something is “I was half asleep when I did that.” Because almost inevitably, the time you most need a quick fix on something is when you’re running around getting ready in the morning.

EvanDeSimone (#2,101)

@bgprincipessa they could easily write that on my tombstone. I kind of hope the do actually.

@EvanDeSimone “Why does it say R.I.I.P.?” “Oh man I totally forgot about the funeral and had to chisel the fucker while I was half asleep.”

honey cowl (#1,510)

@EvanDeSimone this thread makes me so happy and I’ve been rereading it while stifling my laughter. A+++

EvanDeSimone (#2,101)

@stuffisthings That’s pretty much how i expect it to go down, yes.

amglory89 (#3,588)

@EvanDeSimone convenient for us….

EvanDeSimone (#2,101)

@EvanDeSimone i’m happy when you’re happy.

amglory89 (#3,588)

@EvanDeSimone Man of my dreams.

Lyesmith (#4,385)

@EvanDeSimone You remind me of my friend, who’s currently in law school and using a pair of jeans to cover the gap in his curtains. Unlike you, he’s perfectly fine with that.

lsilva0613 (#5,368)

Can my one thing be that I finally made an account on the Billfold?

My one thing really needs to be paying the sewer bill. It was due a while ago.

LookUponMyWorks (#2,616)

@lsilva0613 Welcome!

aetataureate (#1,310)

@lsilva0613 Yes welcome! What’s a sewer bill though.

lsilva0613 (#5,368)

@aetataureate Our house is on public sewer (like instead of septic) so we pay a bi-monthly bill to the county.

EvanDeSimone (#2,101)

Hey, welcome aboard! Good luck with the sewer bill. I wouldn’t want that to…back up? I dunno, i feel like there’s a joke here somewhere but i’m just not finding it.

aetataureate (#1,310)

@EvanDeSimone you covered it with a robe

EvanDeSimone (#2,101)

@aetataureate that sounds like me

Caitlin with a C (#3,578)

I have homework! Due tomorrow. Coming up with one thing: DONE. Doing one thing: what? When?

allreb (#502)

My one thing over the next week, let’s say, is to figure out how to transfer some life insurance my mom bought for me into my own name. I think I was supposed to do this last month. Whoops. :-/

Liz the Lemur (#3,125)

Ugh I finally called my dentist today to book an appointment for when I am back home and they are fully booked. This means that I might have to do the 1 bigger thing of finding a dentist where I actually live…or not have my teeth cleaned til the next time I’m home. (Which might be next Christmas.)

@lemur_niemer Ugh, feel you on this one! I cannot decide whether to find a new doctor/dentist where I live now or just use my old ones as a way to also visit my parents.

Li'l Sebastian (#3,297)

@lemur_niemer You live in Minneapolis, right? Don’t go to the dental school for anything more serious than a cleaning — a friend’s dad almost died of a botched root canal there. If you find a good dentist, I’d be interested in knowing about it because I am still going to the dentist where my parents live, but fortunately my dad takes responsibility for booking it so I don’t run into this problem. #totallyarealgrownup

dirndl (#3,459)

@lemur_niemer Ask your dentist to add you to the cancellation list! People cancel and reschedule their dentist appointments all the time, and usually they keep a list of people willing to take appointments that open up. I’ve had big success with this, although my dentist has a pretty big practice.

LookUponMyWorks (#2,616)

Move some money into my savings account; investigate higher yield savings accounts at other banks!

And make grooming appointment for dog when we’re in hometown next week!

andnowlights (#2,902)

@LookUponMyWorks I’ve been meaning to look into high yield savings accounts for um… 6 months. Then sometimes I venture onto those websites and I am SO LAZY that 4% isn’t enough to make me move my money because I perceive that changing banks is a huge giant pain. It is, though, which is why I still bank with a bank that doesn’t even have branches in my state!

Loshan (#2,799)

Logan, every week your “Do 1 Thing” headlines are so delightful. So, you’re nailing it in that respect.

RiffRandell (#4,774)

Does anyone else feel not only depressed by less daylight, but rushed? Normally my post-work chores end at sunset, not they’re beginning at sunset and it gives me the feeling that I have no time!

But, I will text 1 house sitter regarding house sitting, and I will call 1 Haircuttery regarding hair cutting. They are listed as open until 9PM and looked very closed last time I drove past at night.

echolikebells (#3,272)

@RiffRandell YES. I live in a constant state of “ugh I can’t possibly do that I don’t have enough time” in the winter, but then realize it is only 8pm even though it’s been dark for 2.5 hours. but then I’ve already made the mental decision not to do the things and the depression-linked laziness erases any motivation i might have had earlier. TERRIBLE.

RiffRandell (#4,774)

@echolikebells Yay I’m not alone! And running is the worst. “It’s dark, can’t run!” It is 6PM, I can run just fine, but I don’t wanntttt tooooo

@RiffRandell Yes! I feel like I have to get everything done during my breaks at work because, darkness!! Although yeah, I can’t run at night because small lady + darkness = danger I am old enough to understand I shouldn’t test!

BillfoldMonkey (#1,754)

@RiffRandell YES, good lord. I just thought OH JEEZ it’s bedtime and I haven’t done my One Thing today but it’s not bedtime, it’s 6:09. Stupid dark.

My one thing did itself! I needed to call my claims adjuster to tell him I wasn’t ready to settle the claim for the car accident I was in last year, and he called me instead and was very nice. Hooray 1 thing!

My 1 Thing is to choose a dental plan for next year. This involves peering into the future to see whether or not I’ll need major work done in 2014, so tonight I’ll be Googling the best methods for augury.

2for1cheesecake (#3,591)

My one thing = call student loans people to unlock my account which has been locked for about 8 months. Duh.
Accomplished! I got to talk to an actual person within 3 minutes and he was really nice. Next week, try to switch the day of the month that the payment is due. I thought I would be able to do this online once my account was unlocked, but alas, no.

andnowlights (#2,902)

Confession: I didn’t do my one thing(s) from last week until Monday and Tuesday of this week, respectively. But I did it, because I felt guilty that I hadn’t done them yet! And also because I wanted to cancel my dental appointment 24 hours in advance so I didn’t get charged for it. I didn’t make a new appointment, though, because I don’t want to. I did make an OBGYN “well woman” visit (that is the worst name) and I couldn’t get in til Jan 8, which means I ALSO had to have them give me an extra month of birth control.

Today my one thing is to go to the mall and use Nordstrom as a showroom to try on a pair of boots I put on my list for Christmas but don’t actually know what size I wear in that brand. Also I need to find a necklace for my grandmother for Christmas and a pair of red leather gloves for my mom. I fully intend to have all my Christmas shopping done by the 7th of December because after that it’s madness.

planforamiracle (#4,034)

@andnowlights “well woman” kinda sounds like you’re visiting a witchy/magical medicine woman healer, which appeals to my interests.

andnowlights (#2,902)

@planforamiracle ha ha! It is not that at all. It is the cold, steel duck bill scapula, teaching hospital type of place. I really like my person, though.

honey cowl (#1,510)

@andnowlights Scapula! That is a bone in one’s shoulder. I think you’re thinking of speculum? But it is a funny image, to be sure!

andnowlights (#2,902)

@honey cowl Oh heavens, I am the dumbest. Yes, speculum is completely what I meant. I’m so glad today is Friday, because I need it.

BananaPeel (#1,555)

@planforamiracle “well woman” is the dumbest euphemism of all time. I’m getting a pap smear, deal with it.

planforamiracle (#4,034)

my 1 thing was taking my cat to the bet for the first time yesterday! she did such a good job. also on the weekend I replaced a lightbulb that needed replacing (more of a pain than usual since my whole apartment has stupid recessed lighting and dumb halogen bulbs)
that means I’ve done so many of my 1 Things that I’m down to the few I reeeallly don’t wanna do. Set up You Need A Budget this weekend. waahhhh.

andnowlights (#2,902)

@planforamiracle Ugh, halogen bulbs. I will sit in the dark until they are all burned out before I change those f@#$!&$%. We have 2 different fixtures that use them and they each have like, 6 bulbs each.

Also, I make my husband do it.

My 1 thing was to go get a haircut. Instead I may have gotten impatient and buzzed it off last night in the shower with my boyfriend’s clippers. It was already short but now it is SHORT.

I’ve gotten all positive reviews, though – except for my boss who has said nothing but keeps staring at the top of my head whenever she talks to me.

My new 1 thing is to call my doctor’s office and find out if I can get any sort of discount if I pay my entire $1,000ish bill at one time… I’m hoping they’ll be generous since it’s almost Holiday Season.

andnowlights (#2,902)

@Madeline Shoes Fingers crossed for the doctor bill thing! I tried that one time and it totally didn’t work. Don’t know if I wasn’t nice enough or what, but it was a huge bummer cause everyone told me it would work!

@andnowlights Thanks for the crossed fingers! I’m really nervous because I’m not very good at asking for things! People keep telling me they’ve gotten discounts, and I never would have even thought to ask. I’ve been putting it off for about a month and the bill is due on the 30th!

I was super blindsided by the bill – I had some health problems a few years ago and have to get yearly blood work/labs. I’ve been lucky to be on my parents AWESOME insurance up until about six months ago and never realized how good their insurance really was until I went to an appointment on my own insurance. I definitely was not expecting $1,000ish for a few blood tests! Fortunately this should be my last one?

Elyse (#5,328)

My 1 Thing is to start my online Defensive Driving course to erase two points on my license before my premium goes up. I was ticketed over the summer for ALLEGEDLY turning left on red, and I didn’t have the mental strength to contest it, so I just paid the $85 online and accepted the points.

A typical Defensive Driving course is $35 or so, but I bought a Living Social deal for $15 last week, so that makes me feel a little better about the whole thing. Now I just have to sit through the thing.

My next 1 thing is finding a new dentist so I can get my wisdom teeth out. Explaining why I need a new dentist is a whole other 1 Thing.

cawcawphony (#2,990)

I did my one thing, but I really want to bitch about my one thing from a couple weeks ago. I was putting off calling the student loan people and finally did it. One of the things I wanted to do was change the due date of my bill. No problem! Dine in two minutes!

Got an email yesterday denying it because I’m enrolled in IBR. 1) Why does that matter and 2) more importantly, why didn’t the person I was on the phone with tell me this??

@cawcawphony UGH I’M SORRY THIS IS SO FRUSTRATING. I tried to get my due date changed to the last day of the month instead of the 20th (what??? the 20th?? This does not work with my paycheck schedule.) and the same thing happened. My dad even WORKS for a company that issues student loans and told me it would work yet… no.

joyballz (#2,000)

I did many things!

-Called my insurance agent and had new cards faxed bc I lost the ones he mailed.

-Mailed the insurance cards to my sister who primarily drives my car.

-Put in an expense request for $600 from work (it was approved).

-Put in a request for a work phone so I can access email/calendar while out of the office (also approved).

-Set up a reservation for my birthday brunch.

-Emailed friends about birthday brunch.

I feel so light!

honey cowl (#1,510)

@joyballz Thank you for that first one because I just realized I never received those fancy cards in the mail even though it’s been nearly 2 months since I last re-upped. You da best.

shannowhamo (#845)

On the topic of cover letters…are they useful to employers? They are often times required but I just find them to be a draining waste of my time as the information about my work history is in my resume and the long online application I filled out. They feel so phony and like Logan said all I want to say is “I can haz full time job plzzzzz?”

Beaks (#3,488)

@shannowhamo Ask A Manager is where I got all my cover letter advice. I found them a helpful place to link my experience to the job description (those that were longer than two sentences…) and to expand on things that I’d accomplished that either didn’t fit on my resume or weren’t really detailed. I also tried to seem like a human with a personality since most companies in my field are small and hire on culture fit. I think it worked- I was still getting calls to set up interviews after I accepted my current position.

amglory89 (#3,588)

My one thing last week was to make a car apt to put winter tires on my car. I sneakily made it for today so that was my one thing (and 158.63$ please and thank you)

qwer1234 (#4,140)

My one thing was to get my ass into therapy. I actually found one through my insurance’s web site that was actually taking on new patients and went to see her on Friday. I’m not a big fan of her, but I don’t know if I should give her a couple more sessions before trying to find someone else?
