Happy Birthday Baby, 1 U.S. Citizenship for You

Do you know about “birth tourism,” the practice of foreign nationals traveling to the U.S. or a U.S. territory to give birth to babies who then are granted U.S. citizenship??? This pisses some people off A LOT! But other people are like, well, if those mamas can make it to the U.S. to have their babies, then that is legal and okay, welcome babies.

Lots has been written—not much of it nice!—about Mexican women illegally crossing the border to have “anchor babies” in California (cost: “free.”) Then: Earlier this year the focus was on Chinese women who were coming to California and spending thousands of dollars to stay in houses in the suburbs to give birth. Now the spotlight is on Chinese women who are paying lots of money to travel to the Mariana Islands, a U.S. territory in the Pacific, to have their babies.

But where can Americans have their babies to give them foreign citizenship??? Looks like: Canada. That’s it. :/

That seems like a pretty good deal though. Pop up over the border to make sure my baby will have accessible healthcare for life? Fuck yeah.

My husband has Canadian citizenship from being born in Quebec. I have been campaigning for him to parlay it into a job there so we can all go and be Canadian and enjoy a sane healthcare system and nice people.

My sister was born in Mexico, and I remember once upon a time my parents having a Mexican baby passport for her, so I think she could claim citizenship there just for being born there? We were born in the 70s, though, so things may have changed.

I was born in Sweden, but all I got for that was a conversation-starter with Scandinavian customs officials when they look at my passport. “Ah, Uppsala! [Something in Swedish.]” “Sorry, I don’t speak it! Nur ein bisschen Deutsch, ha-ha. I was six months old when I left.” I always get paranoid that this makes me look like I’m traveling on false documents and I will be escorted to the airport mini-jail at any minute.
