The 1 Thing Experience

Thursday is a great day to do that 1 thing you don’t want to do but also don’t want to continue thinking about doing.

Last week I made a list of all the things I need to do but here’s the thing: All those things sound terrible and I don’t want to do any of them, ever. I have to do all of them, sometime. But not today! Today I’m going to pay my health insurance bill, which involves logging into online banking and clicking “send.” This used to be automatic but now it is not automatic. I’m a grown woman who can pay her bills, I keep repeating to myself.

I sort of have a one thing of getting that H&R Block free tax review because I had to pay a SHIT TON of money this year, and that is not normal for me, but it sounds really tedious and I hate doing my taxes even once, much less going somewhere in the freezing cold to do them again, so it might be a “next Thursday” thing for the next couple Thursdays.

I got a $150 dollar parking ticket Monday, so my One Thing is to pay that. I also got two hundo from my parents for my birthday (yesterday) when I was visiting them on Sunday, which results in a bummer near-equilibrium, which is still better than a bummer net loss!

Unrelated, but: anybody from the Jacksonville, FLA area know of good places to eat on a kinda-low per diem, especially in the vicinity of Cecil Airport or the Hampton Inn?

Runawaytwin (#2,693)

@probs I lived in jax for a while- it is a huge urban sprawl of a place. There is almost nothing but fast food that I know of out by the airport :( sorry i cant be of better help.

probs (#296)

@Runawaytwin no worries! That’s kinda what I figured looking at the map. Thanks anyway!

One of my coats has a loose button and a rip in the pocket, so my one thing is to sew those tonight; I’ve been putting this off now for about two weeks. I also need to do laundry and ironing, so it’s a theme tonight. I might reward myself by baking some gingerbread muffins — my friend just emailed me the recipe and surprisingly or not, I already have all the ingredients!

my one thing was to take my car in to have a tire checked instead of using 4 very valuable quarters every few days to put air in it. it took about 15 minutes and cost me $20 to have it plugged and made me feel very light and carefree the rest of the day which was nice!

My one thing was to negotiate the rent increase with our landlord and I feel like it was cheating since they called me, but the conversation happened. First with one person and then a supervisor and I got shut down, but I’m glad I asked! And got all of the details I needed.

I did 1 of my 2 things. It was okay. The other of my 2 things is way scarier. However they have both been 1 things since 2012 soooooo this is a victory.

I will start my taxes tonight!

oh wow oh wow, i wasn’t even thinking about 1 Thing Thursday, and I just got back from the auto glass repair place where they patched the chip in my windshield that I’ve been meaning to address for nearly two weeks, so maybe the 1 Thing spirit was moving me without my knowing it. 2 ghostly! i did another 1 Thing last night, but it’s just too boring to describe here, even more boring than the windshield repair.

I need to get a new watch battery and resole two pairs of boots. I also need to call the city finance office to find out why they have sent a tax payment to collections, despite having also cashed my check. I need to refill a prescription. And I need to make a hair cut appointment. Which of these 1 things will I actually do?

readyornot (#816)

@readyornot update: i chose call the city finance office, had to leave a message for a person who wasn’t there and also still hasn’t called me back. 1 thing annoyance. boots and watch tmrw, i hope.

I did my 1 thing on Monday, and it has now turned into a million things, because my FSA keeps denying my claim with form letters that don’t tell me what they actually need from me. Maybe it’s because I didn’t have the Thursday mojo.

A few months ago I started thinking that my husband and I should refinance our house, so I signed up for this stupid check your credit score site, and we all know how that goes: you forget to cancel, your card gets charged. I finally cancelled today, which took some repetition of “No, I need to cancel today.”
Also, I found out today that according the appraisal, our house fell about $20,000 in value from when we bought it two years ago, for about $125,000. We are just barely not underwater by these lights, because we put down a 20% down payment, but the mortgage company views us as having roughly 1% equity at this time.
This is a financial overshare only tangentially related to the 1thing concept, but if not here, where? And I did do my 1thing of cancelling the dumb service I should never have signed up for anyway.

Well, I had several one things, but the thing I actually did was go to therapy for the first time in 5 years. So… I think that counts as a big 1 thing!

I still need to get my husband to get the safe out of the car, though. That’s been on my list for a few days.

The 1 thing I’m NOT going to do today but really need to do is get my eyebrows done, but it’s not happening today, or tomorrow, or anytime soon. Maybe in a few weeks.

TARDIStime (#1,633)

<3 all the Michael Cera 1Things.
My 1Thing was to book an MST appointment for my ankle that has not 100% healed in the months after I sprained it.
My other 1Thing is to go and get a god-damn x-ray already! It's annoying because they don't require an appointment, so I never set a reminder to go at a certain time and then I just keep putting it off.

JitterBug (#1,972)

I love the Billfold for many reasons but one of the biggest ones is this day. I feel so much better when I have that one thing done!

(As a side note, for me the one thing is mailing a letter to my doctor disputing a bill. I love my doctor and she’s fantastic but she screwed up a bill and I can’t afford to wear the cost of her mistake so I’m hoping that me
Bringing her error to her practice’s billing department won’t mess up our professional relationship… Eek!)

Stina (#686)

My must do and what I did was: I bought a piece of French Silk pie for my husband and a piece of Banana Cream pie for me in honor of 3/14 or pi day.

You have your priorities, I have mine.

la_di_da (#1,425)

I did my taxes on Sunday!! Which counts as one thing for at least a month.

But really, and i feel like this is always my one thing, I need to get an eye appointment and get new glasses before I’m run off my mother’s FSA plan in a few months.

BananaPeel (#1,555)

My 1 Thing is so obvious and weak but for some reason it was a huge struggle for me to just do it. I had to cash a check, which doesn’t even involve going to the bank, just taking a picture of the check with my phone! And now I am $50 richer, thanks Grandma!
