I work for a large financial company and you would not BELIEVE the number of exceptions that get made just because the management team doesn't want to keep fielding your calls. Really, with the amount of (paid employee) time and paperwork/reporting it takes any agency worried about the possibility of audits, it's worth it to do whatever they have to to get you to stop calling if you seem committed. @Astigmatism

Really, with the amount of (paid employee) time and paperwork/reporting it takes any agency worried about the possibility of audits, it’s worth it to do whatever they have to to get you to stop calling if you seem committed.

When I consolidated my student loans six years ago, I didn't realize that one of the loans (a "small" one, for $10k) didn't consolidate, and then when I moved out of the country for six months and left my old address and cell phone behind, I lost all means of that loan company contacting me. When I got back the next year, I pulled my credit and found a 150-day delinquency. Yikes! I instantly paid up and put that loan on autodeduct, but my credit has been shot ever since. I wrote one of those letters to the president of the loan company a few weeks ago, and got a nice acknowledgement call saying they'd received my letter and would let me know, but nothing since...
