Comfy, durable shoes and outerwear are a must. As a subway commuter, I've also invested in an e-reader, which I definitely would not have bought otherwise, but 400-page hardcovers were starting to give me a back problems. Still, (relatively) small prices to pay for the freedom, convenience, free exercise and environmental friendliness of a car-free life. Really good point about the clothing costs! I had a employer once tell me that my bag was too big to fit in our store room/employee coat room and that "most people left their stuff in the car." Good for them. I figure that it's wearing thin on my friends that I ask them to help me run errands, even if I bribe them with lunch & booze (probably more expensive than the car share time). Got a discount membership from the company's website, but I'm not sure if it's financially worth it for anything other than trips to stores with bulky items. I just joined a car sharing thing today!
