‘They Want Money or They Want Drugs or They Want Death’

This interview with a social worker named Lorian who works with the homeless population in the Tenderloin neighborhood in San Francisco is a thing you should probably read. Her job is insane. She makes $32K a year. (“I think I got into social work because I had this idea of it somehow ‘killing’ my ego. It seems silly, but it felt very real at the time. There’s a sadness to watching your idealism and convictions go to shit. Not to mention that working in such a thankless and fucked system will kill a sacred part of you. I feel tired. For the most part, people do not want help. They want money or they want drugs or they want death.”)

I am not really sure what to think about this interview. I worry that people can hold it up and say “See, this is why it’s a waste of money to help these people.”

Yikes. I wish i would have double checked where that interview was coming from as the ads/banners are completely not safe for my work. While i know ultimate responsibility falls on me- a warning would be great next time.

@Runawaytwin I only had an ad for FIGHTLAND and I don’t have sound, I don’t think that’s what you were referring to?

@Runawaytwin thanks very much for the heads-up! My boss is sitting right behind me, and while I think it’s ok if I look at a blog or two throughout the day, that could have been…very awkward if I didn’t click “close” in time!

Perhaps i am wrong (as i closed the page quickly) but at the bottom in the comments were links/images that would raise the attention of my HR. Again i know the responsiblity is mine.
