It sounds as if the bank charged a legitimate overdraft fee, since it had to pay for something for which the author did not have enough money to cover, so I'm not sure why it should have been reversed in the first place.

The author mentions, "New legislation had passed that seemed to prohibit overdraft fees," but I've never heard of any legislation that would prohibit overdraft fees, and there is no link to that.

But this isn't just about bad customer service - it's about the bank actually breaking the law in order to get more money, so to my mind it's totally justified for the government to intervene. Just a quick google search points out that banks got $30 billion in profits from overdraft fees in 2012.

Real message of the article: "It’s easy to complain, and complaining seems to have gotten results. But the idea that the government has to mediate customer service disputes is a pretty sad commentary on the state of the banking industry."

Sad indeed. But banking customer service really does seem to require persistence or external intervention of some sort. I kept getting run around with inconsistent answer once in a dispute, and I think I contacted the bank three or four times in order to get a fee reversed. Same incident, different bank implicated: only required one time. So I guess it does vary by bank.
