Data based approach
Fails to account for inflation; basic calculation yields that $16 in 1990 has current buying power of $28.11- therefore, buy more Snickers

How on Earth did this article get printed referring to the second-largest private corporation as Brawny? They're a subsidiary of a subsidiary of Koch Industries, which is that actual second-largest private corporation.

In order of preference:
1. Raise the price
2. Make the product smaller

I have no interest in option 3, which is buying a different product made with inferior ingredients or different ratios.

I graphed the Hershey bar prices vs size vs price per ounce over 100 years. http://www.flickr.com/photos/typetive/2776687821/

Adding in the commodities cost would be interesting.

Oddly enough, I noticed the American Dove Chocolate Bars got bigger last year. Can't figure out how they managed that.

Everything about this is hilarious and good, except for one glaring omission:
Chocolate produced by the companies referenced in this story is produced by slave labor, under miserable and violent conditions. Regardless of the sugar-to-fat ratio of the bar, savvy global-northern consumers should educate themselves about how their shopping choices directly affect people living in the southern half of the globe, and make changes accordingly. No one needs to die for us to have cheap candy. Seriously. That's nuts. (Google chocolate slavery to learn more.)

As a fellow candy enthusiast, I love this data-based approach! I have explained to many people why Robin Eggs, despite being similar in concept to Whoppers, are far superior, and I think they are a little taken aback by how into it I am willing to get. I have nowhere near that self-control required to buy a case of anything at a time, though.

@Mrs. Beeton on gawker or the awl? Perhaps on both which would make sense but I'm asking because it's too to finish reading at work and I keep checking back on the awl because no one has commented and I want to hear thoughtsssss.
Anyway, this was fascinating. I recently ate a Reese's peanut butter cup for the first time in years and they have definitely downgraded the quality of their ingredients. :(

Between this and the Navy Seal Who Shot Bin Laden post on Gawker, I can't believe I've come across the word "truculent" twice in one day. It usually appears, oh, never.
