I lived in that same building in DC where you had your studio! That was a nice place. I am interested in learning about this downpayment assistance thing you speak of--just to see what my dreamlife options would be.

@norawallis Nora, thanks so much for this info! I'm going to try to set up an appointment with Urban League soon to discuss my options! I'm so excited to learn about options for people whose savings accounts only dramatically lurch forward because of such high costs of living and meager non-profit wages (AND I use part-time jobs to supplement my income). I hadn't heard of NACA, but will look into them, too! Thanks again! :)

@eagerber HPAP is the same program I used! The biggest obstacles happened around my inspections (after you send in your own inspector, they send another one JUST TO MAKE SURE, and my process resulted in five – yes, five! – inspections) and closing (in the eleventh hour, my mortgage lender and the Urban League had a massive disagreement about what the HPAP closing funds could be applied to). Even so, with all of that drama, I’m hugely grateful for what HPAP enabled me to do. Also, because the Urban League requires you apply for HPAP through a CBO, I benefited from the awesome folks at Housing Counseling Services, who I probably wouldn’t have bothered to call if it hadn’t been mandatory.

I also looked at purchasing through NACA, but HPAP ended up being a better match for me, mostly because I qualified faster for the one than the other. NACA is pretty amazing, though - I think I used the phrase "too good to be true" multiple times when describing it for other people.

I just looked into the HPAP thingy because I, too, am a DC resident, working for a non-profit org making a low-income wage. I think I qualify! This is so amazing. I'd love to hear more about the hoops you went through, and if other people have gained assistance through similar programs.

I love the things I find out about through the Billfold! Seriously. I tell my boyfriend day in and day out "I heard it on the Billfold." I'm so happy this place exists.
