I Do Cherish You 1 Thing

Thursday is a great day to do that 1 thing you don’t want to do but also don’t want to continue thinking about doing.

My 1 thing is to find out exactly how much money I owe to myself. Two months ago, I reinstated overdraft protection so that my bills will get paid even if I don’t have money in my account to pay them.

Historically, I used this trick to spend money I didn’t have. It automatically cancelled last year when I lost my card, and I put off reinstating it. On one hand, emergencies happen! On the other hand, I have a really loose definition of emergencies.

But I did decide to reinstate it because running out of money is stressful, but having payments to landlords, debtors, health insurance companies bounce is way, way more stressful. What’s a little bit tricky about this is that I’ve made SOLEMN VOW TO MYSELF to not use credit cards anymore, and this goes against that rule.

But I made ANOTHER SOLEMN VOW TO MYSELF in reinstating the overdraft protection that I would “pay back” any money used to cover bills as soon as I got another check. So my 1 thing today is to figure out exactly what I’m transferring back to the card when I get it, and then plan for the rest of the year. Is your 1 thing also to figure out how much money you owe yourself?!

my one thing was to figure out how to pay down the balance of a credit card i no longer have with a billing system that wouldn’t let me enroll without an expiration date and security code.

turns out, you can just call the 800 number and pay over the phone. ha. this took me two months to realize, mind you.

hurrah, one thing!

pterodactylish (#2,321)

mailed a month (ok, two) late thank you note today! better late than never.

kellyography (#250)

My 1 thing that is like this but not is figuring out how much I have actually paid on my student loans vs. how much I borrowed.

My more tangible thing to do today is to return a bunch of jeans to Macy’s because my body hates all the clothes and nothing fits it right.

Dancercise (#94)

My thing today was a fun thing! Weeks ago I bought a deal for a $34 16×20 photo-to-canvas print from Cafe Press (shipping included!). I forgot about it completely until this Monday, and I’ve been meaning set aside time all week to order something before it expires. So this morning I finally ordered a family photo from my brother’s rehearsal dinner to give my parents for Christmas.

My one thing was to get an IUD to spite the anti-science doctor who said I shouldn’t (see deets on the IUD post), which I did yesterday!

My related one thing is to call and cancel my follow up appointment with the anti-science doc, complain to her supervisor, and then schedule an appointment with a dermatologist. Lots of health things happening this week!

And now The Billfold know more about my healthcare than my mother. I’m starting to think I should make Mike and Logan my emergency contacts.

honey cowl (#1,510)

@polka dots vs stripes Yay IUDs! Boo anti-science doctors!

maiasaura (#924)

@polka dots vs stripes @Lauren How was the insertion, if that’s not too personal? I have thought about going IUD (I can’t use birth control with estrogen in it), but my sister got one and said the insertion was pretty excruciating and now I’m chicken.

@maiasaura Mine wasn’t bad – I was on my period, which helps, and also took 800mg of ibuprofen about an hour beforehand. It hurt like a really bad cramp, but only for a minute, max, while she was messing around in there. I felt a couple sharp pinches as well, but honestly it wasn’t terrible.

A friend of mine got one at a different point in her cycle and she said it hurt a lot, so I’d definitely recommend trying to schedule it when you’re pretty confident you’ll be on your period.

I’ve been uncomfortable since then, but nothing a few advil hasn’t helped. Hopefully that will start feeling better by tonight but we’ll see.

@maiasaura I am also a little bit concerned about how badly I am craving chocolate right now, won’t lie, but that also could be period + IUD? Hm.

maiasaura (#924)

@polka dots vs stripes Useful information, thank you! I just ate two squares of the super-dark chocolate my coworkers don’t like and now my notes have chocolate smears all over them, so I’m definitely blaming it on the season. Yum.

theotherginger (#1,304)

@maiasaura check out the hairpin. there is a huge thread about it. also congrats @polka dots or stripes – on cancelling appointment AND complaining

Lily Rowan (#70)

Thanks to this post, I just made payments on two loans and tried to figure out why I haven’t gotten a student loan statement in two months. They were unhelpful.

My one thing is to finish my Christmas cards and send them out finally. I won’t finish them all tonight, but this weekend I definitely will.

readyornot (#816)

@cuminafterall I am curious – what is your card routine? Like, how many do you send? Do they have personalized messages and handwritten addresses, or form letters and printed labels? Because my list of recipients is getting long and I can’t write paragraphs-long notes anymore, at least not with any hope of actually sending them.

@readyornot This is an intense year for me, because my Christmas cards are also the save-the-date cards for my wedding. So I’ve got somewhere around 50 cards to write (my fiance is doing his side). I’m really cheap, so I bought some cute cards at Target and handwriting a short holiday message and “save the date for our wedding, [date] in [city].” And I’m handwriting the addresses, too. I wish I’d bought a return address stamp but again, too cheap. In previous years the list has been considerably shorter (under 20) and the cards more personalized. Still, I never wrote more than 3-4 sentences.

selenana (#673)

@cuminafterall Good call. Got to get mine written (I do new year cards, which is more non-denom and is part of my culture) but I struggle with trying to write a million personal notes without sounding wooden and am reluctant to do a form letter even though I like reading them. What to do.

readyornot (#816)

@cuminafterall yeah, 50 is about what I’ve got, expanded from 35 last year. I guess less personalization is the way to go.

I’m going to put in a plug for going ahead and buying that return address stamp, as you can use them on all of your invitations! Also: thank you notes, next year’s Christmas cards, etc. And they’re kind of fun, old-fashioned things to have.

Fig. 1 (#632)

@cuminafterall ohhh…Christmas cards. This is one thing I just forgot about.

Stina (#686)

It’s been a big “one thing” week. Mostly because my one things have built up and the dam finally burst but I still feel super accomplished.

– I wrote a draft change to the constitution of an organization that I’m on the board of.
– I called up a potential replacement for me on said board (we are term-limited).
– I filled two prescriptions to use up my flexible spending
– I bought some travel insurance with a Hazardous activities rider.*

*This amused me because we’re not cleaning up asbestos or anything. We’re going scuba diving.

megsy (#1,565)

@Stina if you dive frequently check out DAN. Great insurance and a great organization for divers.

readyornot (#816)

I feel like I’ve been doing “just one thing” every day this week. Making eye doctor, dentist, hair cut appointments. Mailing payment for city tax. Mailing request for grad degree diploma be sent to me.

But today’s just one thing is to take a bag of stuff to Goodwill.

E$ (#1,636)

My 1 thing is to start looking for apartments because my lease is up in a month and a half. I thought I found a great one until I re-read the listing and it specified “no guests over ever.” People are the worst.

EM (#1,012)

@E$ Depending where you live that’s probably illegal (check your state/province or city rental bylaws), and if it is you can just ignore it. My last landlord told me I wasn’t allowed to give a spare key to my boyfriend (I didn’t have a buzzer) and I called the residential tenancy board and found out he wasn’t allowed to decide who could have keys. He also told me my boyfriend couldn’t sleep over, which was similarly beyond his landlord rights, so I ignored it.

EM (#1,012)

@E$ Of course, it’s unpleasant to be beholden to a crazy person, so maybe look elsewhere anyway.

theotherginger (#1,304)

@E$ it depends on if it’s in a shared place or your own, which would be more annoying. in ontario, if you technically live with your landlord, or the person who gives cheques to the landlord, you have far fewer rights, so I’d call your local number and they can set you straight.

E$ (#1,636)

@theotherginger @Michelle These are shared places so I’m guessing they are just roommate stipulations gone wild. I’m familiar with the “we’re sharing a studio with no walls, so no guests please” living arrangement, but that’s the first time I’ve seen a listing that prohibits guests in the entire apartment.

But Michelle is right; I should just steer clear entirely, I think.

Slutface (#53)

Renleigh (#2,110)

@Slutface I tried to do laundry yesterday, but when I went in the laundry room there was laundry sitting in both the washer and the dryer. Both were done, but I couldn’t bring myself to pick up that stranger’s underwear (why is it always underwear?) and dump it on top of the dryer, because last time I did that, the person it belonged to came in as I was picking up their underwear. And even if I had done it, they would’ve eventually come in and put their stuff in the dryer, which takes 15 minutes longer than the washer anyway so I’d have been waiting around even longer. So today I’ve got a very grunge look going on. Tonight I don’t care what people leave in the washer; if their time is up, I’m taking it out, because laundry has been my 1 Thing for TOO LONG.

Ever since 1 Thing started, I have been meaning to make a dentist appointment, and every time, I…did not. Until today! Suck it, chipped molar! You will slice up my tongue no more!

LookUponMyWorks (#2,616)

I am with you on the dentist appointment 1 thing. I haven’t been in a few years. I should probably go….

LookUponMyWorks (#2,616)

Made grooming appointment for critter!

Made grooming appointment for self!

Sent out reminder for work holiday party. Thank goodness it’s nearly here; never thought I would stress so much about a party!

honey cowl (#1,510)

I have done many 1 things today. I still have so many more 1 things left to do. /cry

@Lauren Yup. I am going to be at the office for forever.

I spent yesterday evening figuring out my end of year/beginning of year budget/all my expenses/all my moneys. Man. It took all evening. I felt very satisfied and like the Excel King of the World when I was done. So many complicating factors!

Um, so that was my one thing. *cheating*

ThatJenn (#916)

@redheaded&crazy Not cheating! I regularly do my 1 Thing on Friday instead of Thursday because I fail to do anything that fits the description on Thursday.

TARDIStime (#1,633)

@ThatJenn My 1 Things are also always done on Friday, due to Southern Hemisphere time difference.

julnyes (#2,807)

My one thing was to finally fill out and mail my BWHS (Black Women’s Health Study) survey that I’ve been pointlessly avoiding for months. It is an important (and groundbreaking!) study, but I’ve been ignoring it because I wanted to be able to write down a lower weight and better physical activity stats. Oh well, I mailed it out (YEAH) and maybe next Thursday, I’ll start doing the P90X workouts like I’ve been promising myself for the past two months.

TARDIStime (#1,633)

OMG, all the One Things:

– pay outstanding moneys to the Gas and electric company, then shut off the account since Mr TARDIStime and I left the previous house
– wrap my Secret Santa gift
– pay the water bill
– do the enormous pile of washing
– help my mum move/unpack all her stuff (this will be because, like me, she avoids those 1 things so now I have like 10 things worth of 1 things)
– Write some blog posts for my SIL because I’ve been so caught up with moving house/getting my fucking internet on that I’ve fallen off the wagon there…

Maladydee (#909)

I did 2 One Things!
1: I bought my textbooks for the course I’m taking in January (Going back to school at 26, wooo!)
2: I told my mom that I was going back to school. We’ve been pretty distant this year and I felt weird about telling her until it was a sure thing that was *definitely* going to happen, due to too many times in the past where I’ve been all, “I’m going to back to school, I totally am!” and than…. not.
I am heading out the door soon to do my 3rd One Thing, which is pick up cough syrup.

selenana (#673)

My one thing was to finally finish and mail my personal statement (draft) to a prof who is writing a rec for me. Should have sent it about three days ago, finally got it sent at 3 a.m. Thursday nite/Friday morning.
Today I have to pick up some gifts for friends I’m seeing tonight/this weekend. Can’t put it off any longer.

selenana (#673)

@selenana Oh okay and I mailed a postcard that I wrote a year ago.

sventurata (#27)

I cancelled a subscription to a service that I love, but no longer can afford. It didn’t help that the page wouldn’t load in my browser, so I kept starting it and being unable to complete. Oh well. Here’s to prosperity in the New Year.
