Young People, Responsible

They’ve also been criticized in the workplace for focusing on their own needs rather than on-the-job performance.

But the idea that all millennials act the same way, or that millennials as a group are entirely self-centered and unwilling to sacrifice is just plain wrong.

Yes. Oh yes. A post in TIME about how millennials aren’t so “entitled” and are actually willing to sacrifice! An acknowledgement that young people aren’t buying homes because we don’t want to rush into bad decisions, and that we are actually willing to accept whatever jobs we can find because we need the income to pay our bills. More trend pieces on what we’re doing right, please.

OK, I don’t think it’s so much that Millenials aren’t willing to sacrifice, it’s just that we aren’t willing to sacrifice for so little.

@Megano! Exactly. I’ll sacrifice for things that I actually want, but it better actually be leading to something. Martyring yourself to a corporation that thinks you’re expendable doesn’t make you a better person.

@Megano! This! Exactly this! It’s not a desire not to work or to accept sacrifice. It’s an inability to work for nothing. Don’t confuse my need to eat and pay rent with some avaricious thirst for luxury and ease. I need money, I can’t take your unpaid internship.

Well said .

That jobs report linked to is really fascinating, too. Makes me feel less bad about earning 1/3 of the average salary for a person of my education in my city since at least I’m doing better than other people roughly my age!

Blondsak (#2,299)

@stuffisthings I know we live in the same city… could you link to that exact page about salary for this area? I am curious to know where I stand!

@LO Here you go. It’s actually not as bad as I remembered (this is household income). Also it seems I shouldn’t be worried why I’m making so little for someone with a master’s so much as I should be worried I’m making so little for being white.

Blondsak (#2,299)

@stuffisthings Thanks for the link! I apparently get paid mere pennies for my degree level, but I am still in school so I am going to use that as my excuse.

Why should Millenials buy homes when they don’t know if they will have a job next year to pay the mortgage.

CubeRootOfPi (#1,098)

@chic noir Considering many can’t save enough for a down payment because of student loans and other expenses.
