When I worked for the Chapter 13 Bankruptcy trustee, the FBI stopped by regularly to look into the bankruptcies of people with security clearances working for contractors at the military base and the nucular power plant. It hadn’t occurred to me before that, but I guess it makes sense.

The guy with the sick wife and the inherited houses is a really terrible story, that sucks. DO NOT PROBATE THAT WILL. Try not to administer that estate. Let it go in a tax sale, let the bank foreclose.

Good thing James Bond mostly likes to bang bad guy’s girlfriends, I’m pretty sure debt is actually a REQUIREMENT for that. Being a bad guy’s girlfriend, that is.

Is it wrong that my key takeaway from this was feeling happy that I finally saw some numbers that make my debt seem small? (Other than the national debt).

I don’t get why they started with her mortgage debt (which, if they weren’t in foreclosure, isn’t really very much in housing debt) and had the quarter million in credit card debt as an afterthought.

Also, I must stop clicking on links that are desperately trying to use Petraus to get page views – I’m annoyed, and they still win.

@CubeRootOfPi Kelley wasn’t trying to get clearance. She’s just a typical example of people who have plenty of money but still become crazily insolvent because. They’re just using her to attract eyeballs to the piece. Interesting that the article notes that most spies do it for the money, rather than any kind of ideology. Which means, yeah, you want to give those jobs to the people who can manage their finances like adults.

Maybe they should also only give them to single people, since blackmail’s also the logic behind the “Cheat on your wife and you’re fired” policy.
