What We Can Do Today

It’s very difficult to read about and see photos of all the devastation Hurricane Sandy caused last night without feeling the need to do something useful.

I donated to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief fund because it was the easiest and simplest thing I could do.

I put myself on a list of available volunteers through NYC Service (FB page here), and to help with clean-up efforts through the NYC Public Advocate’s Office through a link I found from Anthony De Rosa:

What other ways can we help during this time? I don’t have a bike, and can only walk so far to provide volunteer assistance. I’ve been warmed by the generous offers I’ve seen from my friends who are opening up their homes for people who need food, or water, or a hot shower. I’m fortunate enough to be able to offer the same.

Think about volunteering at a homeless shelter or soup kitchen. With many usual places for street folk taken out of commission, the shelters and kitchens will be overfull.
