Ad Campaign Awful, But Effective

I spent a lot time this week watching television shows online (#1 way to deal with stress: buying food/drink.; #2 way to deal with stress: watching TV), which meant watching this Disney campaign twenty-hundred times. It is emotionally manipulative, and I hate it.

This one with the fourteen year old is the worst one, in my opinion, but there are two others that are equally painful: “You and Lucy at four and a half” (“Thinks elephants can fly …”) and “Calitos and his Abuelos at nine and a half” (“Third time in the U.S., second time in Florida…”). I think making people feel bad about their kids growing up—or making kids feel bad for growing up—is gross. Kids grow up! We all grow up. It’s A Good Thing.

There’s also one with some newlyweds—”You without kids”—but I’m less sold on that. “Let’s go hang out with a bunch of other people’s kids before we have our own.” Nope. ANYWAY have fun crying / buying tickets to Disney.

Haha, this is not how we did Disney World when I was 14. Pick a park, split up (usually with my sister/stepsister), meet up later for dinner. Pretty perfect!

oh god, I did disney world with my family waayyyyyyyy past the age where it stopped being cool.

I have a specific memory of me at 18 probably? EIGHTEEN PROBABLY. Getting one of those ridonculous turkey drumsticks with my dad and the dude was like “if you both do the chicken dance for me you can have it for free” I guess assuming that any 18 year old in her right mind would be far too cool to stoop to such lows (or perhaps any grown man in his right mind … anyway …)

yeah we rocked that chicken dance. So there disney world. So. There.

@redheaded&crazy I would totally have done this for a turkey leg! I never got one!

My sister is one of the adults in this world who likes to do Disney w/o kids. I was very cynical about it but I’ve been with her twice now and had a great time. I like amusement parks in general so I may be a little biased.

I love Disney World, but I grew up two hours from Orlando and so we went all the time and I have a lot of fond childhood memories associated with the park. I haven’t been since 2008, when I went with my family for my 23rd birthday (sister was 19 so we were all adults) and we had THE BEST TIME. EPCOT is amazing when you are an adult, and my sister and dad got one of those books that tells you all the secrets of the parks, including where the hidden Mickeys are, and we found all the Mickeys. And my sister and I rode Haunted Mansion twice in a row, because the speakers in our Hearse Buggy were broken and so they just let us keep going. And we ate all the food and because it was my birthday I got all the free desserts. Some guy at the food court in the Land Pavilion at EPCOT even vaulted the counter to give me a free cookie when he spied my birthday pin. I don’t live in Florida anymore so I don’t get back to Disney enough but, man, I LOVE DISNEY WORLD. Especially when it is my birthday.

@TheDilettantista Drinking around the worlddddd. So dangerous. Like, actually difficult to get through it all – you have to plan ahead if you want to be standing at the end.

There was actually a New York Times article written a few months ago about whether or not Disney World can be fun for adults. Conclusion: maybe, if you drink a lot.

I’ve done Disney at all ages and have fond memories. (It was our yearly family vacation. One day to drive down, one in the park, one day back up.) I’ve done it as an adult but think it’s way more fun with little kids. They’re so amazed and excited about everything! It’s contagious.
