‘So, You Needed to Pay for More Levels?’

After my post on law school the other day, one of you sent me this video, which I thought was funny. Obviously, not all of us think grad school was a scam, because some of us loved the experience and benefited from it. I also enjoyed my grad school experience, and I can honestly say I wouldn’t be here writing to you today if I hadn’t gone. If you’re going to go, my advice is to get as much money as you can.

One of the main reasons I got my Master’s in English was that it was basically free. My tuition was covered by a scholarship (which also gave me $150 per semester for textbooks) and I had a TA position for 8 of the 10 months which didn’t give a huge amount but enough to cover rent (living in a cheap town with a roommate), internet and my cellphone.

Professional degrees are harder to get money out of though. I managed to get a grand in scholarships for my first year and I was very proud of myself. But yes, try to get money from the university because you don’t know how long it will take for you to get a job in your field.
