Do All The Things You’ve Been Putting Off (Syke Just Do 1 Thing)

OKAY. Today is the day for task-doing! My 1 thing for the day is to change my address on all of my accounts to Mike Dang’s address. He has GRACIOUSLY offered to collect my mail while I am “without address” for some weeks. PS: You know that phrase, “Be careful what you wish for?” WOW is that true.

I had wanted to move out of my apartment forever, and then I got all zen and adult about it and decided it was good and okay and affordable and that I should be happy for what I have and I even started to be happy about it! I’d walk down the street whistling and smiling and tipping my hat to my neighbors … and now I have to be out in 30 days.

SO. Switching all my accounts to Mike Dang’s house: CHECK. (You might ask, Why not just forward your mail!? GREAT QUESTION. Apparently my apartment is listed as a business address by the postal service, and one cannot forward mail from a business to a residence, even if the business in question is actually a residence.)

“tipping my hate to all my neighbors” = BEST TYPO EVER

Mike Dang (#2)

@wearitcounts I had to fix that typo for Logan because I couldn’t bear the thought that anyone would tip any hate to anyone.

wearitcounts (#772)

@Mike Dang haha aw you are far less evil than i.

(not that i believe logan would tip hate to anybody ever. she would not. it was just a really great typo.)

EvanDeSimone (#2,101)

@Mike Dang @wearitcounts This is actually the only way any of my neighbors interact with us. It’s just monied yuppies in jogging costumes tipping their hate all day.

@wearitcounts my terrible proofreading skills are a genius

wearitcounts (#772)

@EvanDeSimone i had a neighbor who tipped hate at me in the form of getting blackout drunk and slashing three of my tires.

he is no longer my neighbor.

EvanDeSimone (#2,101)

@wearitcounts That is a slightly more serious style of hate tipping. My neighbors just don’t acknowledge my greetings as they saunter by with their tiny freaky purse-dogs. I should point out though that this slashes my feelings almost as deeply as your tires and I am left feeling equally deflated.

wearitcounts (#772)

@EvanDeSimone that was beautiful.

RachelG8489 (#1,297)

Logan, I totally understand this: I was 100% ready to be okay with being stuck with an asshole roommate for a little while… and then we got notice.

Luckily, I found a new place in time and I’m moving on Sunday and since asshole roommate is spending the weekend at her parents’, I think tonight is the last night I ever have to share an apartment with her!

RachelG8489 (#1,297)

@RachelG8489 Also, this has reminded me that my one thing should be the same as Logan’s, except changing everything from my current address to my new address 15 blocks further north.

honey cowl (#1,510)

UGH I hate doing the 1 thing. OKAY OKAY I’LL DO IT

honey cowl (#1,510)

@Lauren Okay I did my 1 thing and it was traumatic and now I’m crying at work. Yikes.

frushka (#1,207)

wait whyyy do you have to be out??

la_di_da (#1,425)

@frushka @frushka ditto! details! Evicted? Violated lease? Super secret exotic pet smuggling business?

MuffyStJohn (#280)

@frushka Seriously. INQUIRING MINDS WANT TO KNOW.

Megano! (#124)

@la_di_da CHEESE SMUGGLING!?

@Megano! @frushka @muffystjohn ONE DAY I SHALL TELL THE TALE (one day when my stuff is no longer in the apartment)

Nick (#1,548)

@Logan Sachon And by “stuff” you mean your huge stash of clandestine Gruyere and illegal Gouda, right?

wearitcounts (#772)

@Logan Sachon ok now i REALLY want to know

editrickster (#279)

@wearitcounts Yea, me too. *tenterhooks*

la_di_da (#1,425)

Ugh. I’m in the middle of moving. That shit is expensive. As someone who just came off the $700 budget, I think you’re looking at Bushwick–there are nice things there now(reportedly)! Lefferts Gardens too and Crown Heights (<3), but only if you’re willing to move south. We’re hip here too!

Speaking of that 1 thing–quickly! to Verizon! to ensure continued internet next week at my new abode!

wearitcounts (#772)

also i did that one thing last night, which was to ask my mother something. and then we got into a fight about it, so i did that one thing today and apologized. sigh, moms.

liznieve (#37)

@wearitcounts I hear you. I recently had A Difficult Conversation with my mom that we had put off (grandma promised to help me with my student loans with a portion of her estate! my portion went to you for tax purposes! it’s been 5 years and i havent seen any of it!) and OOOOF. Man, WASPs make confrontation uncomfortable.

probs (#296)

That sucks! I did my one thing Tuesday. I lost the key to my overhead cabinet at work while on a business trip, and I’ve been calling the car rental place over and over, but they haven’t found it. All my important stuff was with me on the trip, but it was finally looking like I’d have to face consequences and have to tell someone about it. Instead, I used a fork to get it open, and there was a spare key inside. #security

Fig. 1 (#632)

@probs And then you put the fork on your keychain, yes?

Jellybish (#560)

I forgot it’s that time again. This week: officially took up the house search again by e-mailing my Realtor to set up some showings.

Megano! (#124)

I CAN’T EVEN FORWARD MY ADDRESS HERE W/O PAYING A MILLION DOLLARS WHY
Also I need to move in a couple months and I was just looking at apartments and it stressed me out so much I woke up at 7am worrying about. I really like my apartment, I just wish I could move it closer to downtown. I don’t wanna lose my dishwasher/massive apartment!!!!

editrickster (#279)

@Megano! I like that you listed your dishwasher first! If we had a dishwasher, I would hate to lose it also.

Nick (#1,548)

One cannot forward mail from a business to a residence? What kind of absurd rule is that? And still the postal service wonders why it’s becoming more and more obsolete with every passing day.

@Nick I got a piece of returned mail today that I sent in May…across town…it took 4 and a half months to be returned to sender f…

OK I just went to map the distance and saw that the business is now closed, so maybe it’s not the USPS after all. Never mind.

@Nick I actually had this issue when I moved a few years ago (and hated my landlord so much I made him go through the hassle of changing the status of the building with the post office, HA). It’s so that a disgruntled employee (or anyone, I guess, really) can’t sabotage a company by redirecting their mail.

Dancercise (#94)

I did my one thing yesterday! I called my car loan people to confirm if paying more than the minimum payment on my loan goes toward the principle. It does!

LizF (#1,399)

I did my one thing right now (checking on my student loans) and it made me so sad. But I do feel good that I had been putting it off for days and it took literally 30 seconds of my time.

I did my one thing, and emailed a potential roommate. I decided that I wouldn’t advertise, but I would peruse room wanted ads and see if anyone looked plausible. Even if it’s just 6 months, that income would really help me out & maybe I’ll make a friend in the process.

professionalmess (#1,478)

I did my one thing, which was just taking a tiny walk to pick up my transcript, but I put it off for like 2 weeks.

bibliostitute (#285)

I replaced the lost title for my car yesterday. (1 thing).
Today, I emailed two professors asking them to write me letters of rec for grad school (1 thing).
Tomorrow, I will do my last load of laundry before I move to Jerusalem for 9 months!
I am on a do-one-thing roll!

Sincerely, Jane (#1,588)

Ugh, thank you for this. Address is changed and eye doctor appointment is scheduled!! The eye doctor appointment has been on my to-do list since JANUARY.

I called the Secretary of State to see where my absentee ballot was! I guess I panicked early because they haven’t even sent them out yet.

sventurata (#27)

Do you guys not have an office that Logan can forward her mail to?

@sventurata we’re kind of office squatters

blueblazes (#1,798)

Did my one thing. The glass repair guys are replacing my windshield tomorrow. (I’ve been putting this off since… February.)

I did my one thing yesterday (ask my boss to work from home the week of Thanksgiving) and will do my other one thing tonight (actually buy ticket home for Thanksgiving…and ask my mother to cover my airport parking. I hate having to ask her for money :/).

Fig. 1 (#632)

Guys, I finally checked how much I have left on my student loan and it is not as much as I expected so I am going to pay that sucker off as soon as I get home with a lump sum. This is INTOXICATING.

@Fig. 1 that’s so great! wahoo!

Fig. 1 (#632)

@Claire Henry@twitter I’ve gotten *far more* satisfaction out of doing this than from anything else I could have bought (or visited) with that amount. I’m sure Logan will write all about the feeling in great length once she’s paid off all her debt.

editrickster (#279)

I made an appointment for a haircut and did a shit ton of things at work. But the ONE THING that I have been putting off is cutting the cord with the gym membership I haven’t used that’s costing me $80/month.

OK, I’m calling the gym tomorrow.

wearitcounts (#772)

@editrickster omg do it. $80/month? that’s like millions of dollars a year, right?

(idk, math bad-touched me as a child so now i only roughly estimate.)

glow bug (#1,606)

By syke did you mean psych? I used to make this mistake so please take the correction in an informative, rather than a condescending, spirit.

selenana (#673)

@pigforker Or maybe SIKE

@pigforker in my heart, it is spelled “syke,” so i spell it syke. you may spell it however you wish!

glow bug (#1,606)

I finished my one thing, which was a list of invitees to my baby shower. That was a really overwhelming thing. I was kind of in the process of finishing the thing when I paused to read the article tho, so I don’t know if it counts?

Meh, it was huge, so it counts!

kellyography (#250)

I did my one thing – I just painted my nails instead of biting them off (which is normally what happens).

Also I always assume anyone who uses an incorrect spelling of “psych!” is doing so ironically. Saves me a lot of time.

wearitcounts (#772)

@kellyography just painted my nails too!! i would say SYKE but i’m not i’m for real.

I did my one thing today, and it was to renew my expired (by 4 months) health card. I scanned in my form and *emailed* it to my provincial health service and BINGO health care coverage extended for a year. Big relief!

okay I did not accomplish any one thing today BUT something amazing happened earlier this week!

My dentist’s receptionist called to remind me that I’m due for a cleaning! !!!!!!!!!!! She was like “oh I’m just calling to remind you so you know, give me a call back to book whenever” and I was like “NO. STAY ON THE LINE. I WILL BOOK IT NOWWWWW.”

And I did, and I’m going to get my teeth cleaned on Saturday. I just love when a plan comes together.

sara moon (#650)

I finally renewed my licence today and had the condition that I need to wear glasses whilst driving taken off. I was expecting to wait for a good hour, but I was in and out in 5 minutes and my new licence is in the mail. It was a good day.
