Where Have All The Hoboes Gone? (Iowa)

“The National Hobo Convention has been held in Britt, Iowa, since 1900.”

Vagabonds! People who work and wander without many dollars to their name or a permanent place to call a home! Scott Lamb has a great story (and photos), of going to the National Hobo Convention, and meeting with the eclectic crowd. They even do a rendition of “Call Me Maybe” on a recorder (seriously, no one can escape that song). Also, if you wander, but don’t work, you’re a tramp. And if you don’t wander or work, well you’re just a bum. The more you know.

Megano! (#124)

Is it really spelled “hoboes” not “hobos”?

Mike Dang (#2)

@Megano! Merriam Webster says both spellings are correct! I went with the one Buzzfeed used.

Good read. I was a little surprised that the writer was surprised that hobos still exist. Are they that removed from mainstream culture? Maybe it was my choice of subculture/fact that trains ran through my town/whatever, but I have certainly met, spoken to, befriended hobos. This is the first time I’ve overtly heard/seen someone say they didn’t know it was a thing.
