Had a similar experience in college. Sold a 70′s Les Paul Custom to pay for one quarter of college back in ’91. I think I got around $600 for it because nobody wanted Les Pauls at the time. Now it would be worth over $10000, and I still wouldn’t sell it again.

*sigh*…I hope it has a good home now.

Wow, this piece isn’t just great writing but such an amazing story! I feel you, having been in the band with great ambitions that goes nowhere. I’m also incredibly attached to the Hofner bass I bought with my first paycheque after graduation. It sits in a closet now, unused for at least a year. But I can’t bear to part with it, mostly because I love it and hope to take up bass again one day but partially because its a freaking Hofner….

Ah, Lenox Hill, the boutique hospital of the UES. It could have been worse (Bellevue, etc.). This was a great and upsetting piece Stu. I hope you’re feeling better.

@deepomega Indeed, it was student loans and the collective burden of other indulgences agglomerated elsewhere in the story — the Albini sessions, traveling, the guitar purchase itself, the hospital stay, etc. It adds up fast! If you wanna call 14 years fast. It definitely felt like it flew by, anyway.

Gorgeous piece. But if I may be so bold – we jump from four figures (let’s be generous and round up to 10,000) of debt for the hospital stay, to almost 100k in debt. Is that student loans? Other shit? I’m always curious how the overall damage gets done.

I’m blown away by how beautifully done this piece is, not to mention how I had a very similar experience when I sold my first guitar in college to pay off a debt. There are few words to describe my present state…thank you for publishing this.
